Today on World Oceans Day, we turn our eyes north — to Churchill, Manitoba, where the vast waters of Hudson Bay meet the subarctic tundra, and where murals speak louder than words.
In 2017, artist Kal Barteski and the PangeaSeed Foundation brought 18 international artists to this remote town to create SeaWalls CHURCHILL — a public art initiative that transformed empty buildings into powerful messages about ocean conservation, climate change, and community strength.
Spanning 30 km along the shoreline, these murals reflect personal conversations with local residents, the deep environmental challenges facing Churchill, and the urgent need to protect our oceans and coasts.
On this occasion, we affirm our commitment to global ocean and Arctic stewardship by supporting Polar Bears International’s vital work in Churchill. We recognize that shrinking sea ice and warmer climates are imperiling polar bear populations on Hudson Bay’s shores, and we pledge to stand with the community and its wildlife.
