Have you ever seen this beautiful mural up close? 🎨🖌️Located on the Miss Piggy plane wreck titled “Mayday: Emergency Transmission…”, this piece was created by Detroit-based artist Pat Perry in 2017 as part of the SeaWalls CHURCHILL project. Painted on the side of a Cold War-era cargo plane that crash-landed in 1979, the imagery blends skulls, bones, and blooming plants—capturing a powerful message about collapse, climate, and resilience.

Showcasing the power of collaboration ✨
This March, we celebrated the 2nd annual Indigenous Women’s Quest for the Bay Tour— a powerful journey of resilience, reconnection, and cultural pride.

This inspiring initiative was created by Heather Spence-Botelho, after being the only woman on our 2022 Quest for the Bay tour from Thompson to Churchill.

Heather, an Indigenous Knowledge Weaver born and raised in Churchill and an off-reserve member of Fox Lake Cree Nation, envisioned a safe space where Indigenous women could come together, share stories, and reclaim connections to land and culture.

Through Heather’s deep community ties and vision, 10 Indigenous women from across Northern Manitoba came together to travel 330 km by snowmobile from Gillam to Churchill.

A testament to the strength of Indigenous women and the impact of community-led initiatives.

Today on World Oceans Day, we turn our eyes north — to Churchill, Manitoba, where the vast waters of Hudson Bay meet the subarctic tundra, and where murals speak louder than words.

In 2017, artist Kal Barteski and the PangeaSeed Foundation brought 18 international artists to this remote town to create SeaWalls CHURCHILL — a public art initiative that transformed empty buildings into powerful messages about ocean conservation, climate change, and community strength.

Spanning 30 km along the shoreline, these murals reflect personal conversations with local residents, the deep environmental challenges facing Churchill, and the urgent need to protect our oceans and coasts.

On this occasion, we affirm our commitment to global ocean and Arctic stewardship by supporting Polar Bears International’s vital work in Churchill. We recognize that shrinking sea ice and warmer climates are imperiling polar bear populations on Hudson Bay’s shores, and we pledge to stand with the community and its wildlife.

As we countdown to World Oceans Day on June 8th, we are reminded of the importance of the vast waters to polar bears in Churchill and beyond 🐻‍❄️

Polar bears rely on sea ice to hunt, and sea ice forms over the ocean. As oceans warm and ice melts earlier each year, these incredible animals have to work harder — and wait longer — to find food.

🌡️ Less ice = fewer hunts = real survival challenges.

This World Ocean Day, remember: protecting the ocean isn’t just about what’s in the water — it’s also about what lives on it.
