Our tour experts are the heartbeat of Tourmagination, bringing knowledge, hospitality, and care to every journey.

We were so happy to spend time recently with Katarzyna Czaykowska and her family during their visit to Winnipeg from Poland. It was a wonderful time of reconnecting, sharing stories, and exploring history together, including a special visit to the Mennonite Heritage Archives. Thank you to fellow TM tour leader Conrad Stoesz, Archivist at the Mennonite Heritage Archives, for the tour and the opportunity to learn together.

The visit also included birthday celebrations, and time with family and friends, including our some of our TM family Audrey Voth Petkau, Signe Roehr, and Richard Bergmann. These relationships are such an important part of what makes Tourmagination special.

And a reminder, there are still a few spots left on our Prague & Poland Tour this September with Katarzyna Czaykowska and John Sharp. We’d love to have you join us! See comments for details.

Signe Roehr and Diane Bergmann had a wonderful coffee visit with TourMagination tour leaders Jack and Irene Suderman while they were in Winnipeg. Over the years they have become treasured friends, and every time we meet, we come away encouraged.

Their stories of living in Colombia and working with the Mennonite church during years of terrible violence are both heartbreaking and inspiring. What is especially moving is hearing about the hope they now witness as they return to Colombia with TourMagination groups to experience the remarkable transformation along the Magdalena River.

Jack and Irene would both say that what is happening in Colombia is nothing short of a miracle. Come learn about Colombia's history with them, visit local congregations and ministries and then sail aboard a 64 passenger ship along the Magdalena River while you soak in local culture, traditions and food.

Venice’s Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica stand side by side as enduring symbols of the wealth, power, and political structure of the Venetian Republic. The magnificent halls, intricate mosaics, and masterpieces by Tintoretto reveal a society that projected extraordinary confidence, authority, and control.

But beneath the grandeur was also a carefully managed system of secrecy, judgment, and political power. The Council of Ten held enormous influence over the fate of those accused of crimes or heresy, while anonymous accusations could even be submitted through the “Lion’s Mouth” letter boxes placed throughout the city.

It was in rooms like these that Anabaptists and other reformers considered heretics would have been questioned, tried, and sentenced before eventually crossing the Bridge of Sighs into the prison cells beyond.

Standing later near the Venetian Arsenal, one cannot help but wonder whether some condemned to life as galley slaves may have seen Venice for the final time from these waters.

Places like this remind us that some of Europe’s most beautiful spaces also carried stories of fear, imprisonment, and control alongside the grandeur.

What captures your imagination about Anabaptism in Venice?

Standing near the Bridge of Sighs, Kimberly Schmidt reflects on the surprising and often overlooked connections between Anabaptist history and the everyday places many travelers pass by in Venice without realizing their deeper stories.

Sometimes history spreads in the places you least expect.

Venice is a city of grand canals, public squares, and remarkable beauty. But some of its most fascinating stories unfolded quietly in hidden alleyways, gathering places, churches, and ordinary buildings that most people walk past without ever noticing.

As we wandered through Venice exploring places connected to reformist and Anabaptist circles, it became clear how ideas moved through the city beneath the surface of everyday Venetian life. Around Chiesa di San Bartolomeo and the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, German-speaking merchants, trade networks, and conversations about reform intersected in a tightly regulated part of the city.

One of the more striking moments came inside the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, where we stood before Titian’s masterpiece Assumption of the Virgin while reflecting on how provocative new religious ideas and tensions were quietly spreading through Venice during the same era. It was also here that we learned the story of cloistered nuns from Udine who were drawn toward Anabaptist ideas and rebaptism despite living lives largely separated from the outside world.

What makes the Anabaptist connection to Venice especially compelling is that it remains a newer and often overlooked story for many travelers. Some stories in Venice are found not only along the canals, but in the spaces between them.

Venice is often remembered for its canals, trade, art, and beauty. But beneath the surface of the Republic’s wealth and power were also quieter underground networks of ideas, debate, and religious reform.

One of the more fascinating stops during our time in Venice was the historic Spezieria all’Ercole d’Oro, an old Venetian apothecary connected to reformist circles that moved through the city during the 16th century. Places like this were more than pharmacies. They became gathering places where books, ideas, medicine, trade, and theological conversations intersected in a city that stood at the crossroads of Europe and the Mediterranean world.

What makes this especially interesting is that the Anabaptist connection to Venice is still a newer and often overlooked story for many people. Most travelers experience Venice through its canals and landmarks, rarely considering that underground reformist and Anabaptist networks were also quietly moving through spaces like these centuries ago.

It is a reminder that even in some of Europe’s most visited cities, there are still stories waiting to be rediscovered.

Some landscapes leave you momentarily speechless.

Fresh snow dusting the peaks and forests of the Villnöss Valley in the Dolomites created a spectacular backdrop for time spent hiking through the Zans Alm nature area and taking in views of the small alpine churches of St. John in Ranui and St. Magdalena.

There is something grounding about places like this. The scale of the mountains, the quiet of the valley, the rhythm of walking, and the contrast between dramatic landscapes and small places of worship scattered across them all seem to slow time down a little.

The Dolomites have a way of reminding you that some places do not need much explanation to leave a lasting impression.
