: Effective immediately the United States have announced that Canadians planning to operate a vehicle in the US must be in possession of not just a Canadian drivers’ licence, but will need to obtain a Visitor’s Driving permit, and will be required to pay a ‘Federal Alien Toll’ of US $5 daily, $125 monthly or $300 annually.
The fee is applicable across the board whether Canadians are renting a car or operating their own vehicle. VD permits are available online and must be produced prior to renting a car or at Canada/US border crossings in order for the vehicle to be granted entry.
Federal Alien Toll payments must also be paid online and proof of FAT cards produced as requested by US authorities including parking facilities. A FAT Canadian sticker (or magnet – cost extra) must be affixed to the car.
Once ordered and paid for, online FAT Canadian cards will take approximately three weeks to process. Be sure to leave sufficient time to process your card prior to intended travel.
