The summit of Gros Morne Mountain is now officially open to hikers! 🎉
Thanks so much for giving the ptarmigan and caribou some much-needed space at the beginning of their lives. 🫶 🦌
🚶♀️ Approach Trail
This 4.5 km trek to the base of the mountain features steady climbs and some of the most rewarding views in the park. It’s a great hike on its own, taking about 2.5 to 3.5 hours round trip. Not up for the full climb? Aim for the scenic waterfall halfway—it’s the perfect spot to pause and take it all in.
🏞️ Summit Trail
The Summit Trail is a strenuous 8 km loop beyond the Approach, with a 500 m elevation gain and rugged terrain. You’ll need 3–5 hours from the base—and that’s after completing the Approach Trail. This is a full-day hike for well-prepared, experienced hikers.
Before you go, safety first:
☑️ Only attempt the summit on a clear day—fog, wind, or rain can quickly make conditions dangerous
☑️ Bring at least 3 litres of water per person (5 litres on a hot day), hearty snacks, and a first-aid kit
☑️ Wear sturdy hiking boots (never flip flops) and dress in layers—weather changes fast at higher elevations. Don’t forgot sun protection- sun block and a hat go a long way on a hot day!
☑️ Start early to ensure you’re off the mountain well before dark
☑️ Cell service is limited—always let someone know your plan, and make sure to let them know when you’ve made it back safely
❗ Most importantly: Read all trail and safety information before choosing this route.
