The Kivu–Kinshasa Green Corridor is an environmental and economic initiative launched in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to protect tropical forests while promoting sustainable development between the eastern Kivu region and the western capital, Kinshasa.

🌿 Simple definition

It is a green (ecological and economic) corridor designed to connect forest-rich areas in eastern Congo to the capital, focusing on:
• Biodiversity conservation
• Fighting deforestation
• Promoting sustainable activities such as agroforestry, renewable energy, and eco-tourism

🎯 Main objectives
1. Protect the Congo rainforest
The country hosts a major part of the Congo Basin, the world’s second-largest tropical forest.
2. Create green jobs
Support livelihoods through environmentally friendly sectors.
3. Develop green infrastructure
Improve transport and services in a sustainable way across the country.
4. Attract international funding
The project aligns with global climate action efforts.

🌍 Why it matters
• Helps reduce carbon emissions
• Protects unique wildlife (like gorillas and okapis)
• Offers sustainable economic alternatives to local communities.

Tourism impact

The Kivu–Kinshasa Green Corridor has strong potential to transform tourism in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially by positioning it as a major eco-tourism destination in Africa.

🌍 1. Boosting eco-tourism

The corridor promotes travel experiences based on nature and conservation. Key areas include:
• Virunga National Park (mountain gorillas, volcanoes)
• Kahuzi-Biega National Park (eastern lowland gorillas)

👉 These places could attract more international tourists interested in wildlife and conservation travel.

🏡 2. Supporting community-based tourism

Local communities along the corridor can benefit by offering:
• Cultural experiences
• Homestays
• Handicrafts and local products

This aligns with community-based tourism models, where tourism revenue directly supports local people.

🚧 3. Improving accessibility

One major challenge in Congo tourism is infrastructure. The corridor aims to:
• Improve roads and transport links between the Kivu region and Kinshasa
• Facilitate safer and easier travel routes

👉 This makes remote attractions more accessible to tourists.

🌱 4. Promoting sustainable tourism

Unlike mass tourism, this initiative emphasizes:
• Low environmental impact
• Conservation-first tourism
• Responsible travel practices

This could position the DRC as a premium eco-destination, similar to Rwanda’s high-end gorilla tourism model.

💼 5. Attracting investment in tourism

With international climate and conservation funding:
• New eco-lodges can be developed
• Tourism services can improve
• Marketing of Congo as a destination can increase

Virunga National Park protects one of the most diverse elephant habitats in Central Africa. The park is mainly home to the African savanna elephant and some forest elephants in the dense lowland forests.

Elephants in Virunga play a major ecological role. As they move through the forest, they open pathways, disperse seeds, and create spaces that help other wildlife survive. Their presence is essential for maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.

Historically, Virunga had large elephant populations, especially around the Ishasha plains and Lake Edward region. However, decades of armed conflict, illegal hunting, and ivory trafficking greatly reduced their numbers. Conservation teams and rangers have continued working under difficult conditions to restore and protect wildlife populations.

Visitors exploring Virunga may spot elephants during safaris in the savanna areas, particularly near the northern and central sectors of the park. Seeing elephants against the backdrop of volcanoes and tropical forests makes Virunga one of the most unique safari destinations in Africa.

Besides elephants, the park is famous for mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, hippos, lions, buffaloes, antelopes, and hundreds of bird species. The combination of wildlife, active volcanoes like Mount Nyiragongo, and rich biodiversity gives Virunga global ecological importance.
