PRESS RELEASE | Mourning the Tragic Loss of a Grauer’s Gorilla in Kahuzi-Biega National Park

With deep sadness and heavy hearts, Primate Expertise (PEx) and Wild Earth Allies join the Management of Kahuzi-Biega National Park (PNKB) in expressing their profound grief following the tragic killing of a Grauer’s gorilla on 10 July 2026 in the Musisi area.

This devastating incident represents the loss of a precious and critically endangered species and a major setback for ongoing conservation efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Grauer’s gorillas remain among the world’s most threatened great apes, facing increasing pressures from insecurity, habitat destruction, and illegal activities. (MDPI)

Despite the difficult security conditions that continue to limit conservation patrols, we recognize and appreciate the rapid response of local and military authorities in apprehending the suspected perpetrator. We stand in solidarity with Park Management, surrounding communities, and the Wambuti Indigenous Peoples in calling for justice and reaffirming our collective commitment to safeguarding these remarkable primates and their natural habitat.

Together, we remain determined to strengthen conservation actions and protect the irreplaceable biodiversity of Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Bestafrica Tours Ltd Diem Murhula

New monkey species with orange lips discovered in DR Congo 🇨🇩 rainforest.

Scientists have confirmed a new monkey species in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Named the Likweli (Colobus congoensis), the black-furred monkey has distinctive pinkish-orange lips and a deep, powerful call. It lives high in the forest canopy of Lomami National Park.

Researchers confirmed the species using photographs, sound recordings, and genetic analysis after reports from local communities.

Experts say the newly identified species may already be under threat from habitat loss and hunting.
