Kahuzi Biega National Park was gazetted in 1970 to protect the Grauer’s Gorilla, which is the largest of the four Gorilla subspecies. The last surviving Grauer’s Gorilla species of about 250 individuals live in the vast area of the park which is at an altitude of about 2,100m and 2,400 m above sea level. In 1980 Kahuzi National Park was made a Heritage site and in 1997, the Biega National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site to protect and conserve the Eastern Lowland Gorillas and the other endangered category of the threatened species.
