Kahuzi Biega National Park Congo takes you to a tourist wonder in Africa, and among the rare, protected areas to ex

perience the sight of some of the most endangered category of the animal species of the world. A safari in Congo to Kahuzi Biega Park enables you to visit one of the biggest and most sought-after protected areas in the Democratic Republic of Congo located on the western bank of the beautiful Lake Kivu of the Congo basin that covers an area of 6000 km2 both lowland terrain and mountains. The Kahuzi Biega National Park is found in Bukavu Town on the Western bank of Lake Kivu within the Albertine Rift Valley in Eastern DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) – the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa. Kahuzi Biega National Park boasts two primary tropical forest vegetation zones in the Congo basin which are the Kahuzi and Biega, both of which are custodians of diverse and abundant fauna. This primary tropical forest is dominated by over 600,000 ha of dense lowland rainforests, riparian forests, Afro Montane forests, Bamboo forests, a small portion of sub-alpine prairies and heather makes up Mount Kahuzi (3,308), and Mount Biega (2,790) – the two spectacular extinct volcanoes. This large range of unique, diverse, and abundant fauna and flora within the traversing river systems makes this ecological corridor one of the richest protected areas of Africa and the world and among the most important rare sites of the Albertine Rift Valley. Kahuzi Biega National Park was gazetted in 1970 to protect the Grauer’s Gorilla, which is the largest of the four Gorilla subspecies. The last surviving Grauer’s Gorilla species of about 250 individuals live in the vast area of the park which is at an altitude of about 2,100m and 2,400 m above sea level. In 1980 Kahuzi National Park was made a Heritage site and in 1997, the Biega National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site to protect and conserve the Eastern Lowland Gorillas and the other endangered category of the threatened species. Other than visiting the Eastern Lowland Gorillas at Kahuzi Biega National Park, you can also go Gorilla trekking these Mountain Gorillas in Virunga National Park which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Eastern DRC to explore the two species of these primates. Additionally, you may also visit other tourist destinations in the Democratic Republic of Congo for example the Ituri Forest continuous vegetation, Maiko National Park, Upemba National Park, Okapi Wildlife Reserve, and Idjwi Island, among others.
