***EDITED TO ADD: Look up the definition of photography plagiarism.***

A view of ethics through my lens.

“You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything.” -Aaron Tippen

Wildlife photographers are in a unique position to influence generations about the importance of a great respect for nature around us. We should live up to the ethical standards that come with this responsibility.

We also have the responsibility to speak up when we feel ethics are being compromised.

Share if you care.

*Full disclosure- I have had personal experience with Porter, including walking away from our safari company due to his ethics. In my opinion, that does not mitigate the gravity of the ethics in play here.

Are you in this reel?

Why not?

It’s time to book your safari with me somewhere in our amazing world to see and photograph the wildlife you’ve only ever seen in books or zoos.

Pick a trip. More of my 2027 safari schedule is coming soon—including new African Big 5 safaris, a puma photography trip, and penguins in Antarctica. Where do YOU want to go?

It’s not always easy to watch nature, but it’s always fascinating. Here’s a little of what we see, and the photos we take home.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year just announced their Top 100! There are some really spectacular, unique shots in the group taken by dedicated wildlife photographers. Some of the shots are insanely difficult to get: the polar bear, the gecko and butterfly, the swift with the jet—timing, skill, creativity and patience is on full display in these images.

I spotted one that’s almost exactly like a photo that went viral a few years ago when Zaheer Ali captured an oxpecker “snuggling” on a rhino’s horn. It was widely shared through news outlets and went crazy viral on social media.

One of the finalists photos is almost exactly the same as Zaheer’s unique shot. I read the caption on WPOTY’s website, and it’s almost exactly what The Dodo and other outlets wrote about Zaheer’s photo. Not exactly “unique” or “ethical,” as required by NGM’s rules. I wonder if they know?

Interesting.

I was a Finalist and ended up with an Honorable Mention in this contest by the Natural History Museum in 2023, with a photo of a baby hippo being just too cute, out of about 65,000 entries. I’m still so honored by that acknowledgment.

It's National Dog Day, so as a wildlife photographer, I thought I'd highlight some of my favorite Canidae-family photos taken on safaris around the world! Which is your favorite?

1, 2: The Black Backed Jackal is a very ancient species that has changed little since the Pleistocene, being the most basal wolf-like canine, but they are not wolves. They are curious scavengers and are fun to photograph! I found these in the Kalarahi Desert.

3: The Crab-eating Fox is not a true fox, and tolerates a wide range of environments-making it one of the most adaptable South American canids. It's also a true omnivore. They are mostly nocturnal. I was thrilled to photograph this one on a dark, rainy day, as it explored an area in which birds were foraging.

4, 5, 6: The African Wild Dog/Painted Dog/Painted Wolf is the largest wild canine in Africa. With fewer than 6000 individuals left in the wild, it is on IUCN's red list of endangered species. I love seeing these on safari with clients. Each coat is colorful and unique, so it's a treat to your eyes as they dash around, playing and hunting all at once.

7: The red fox is the largest of the true foxes. They are generally monogamous. This male was bringing a squirrel back to the den to feed 5 hungry kits.

8: I spotted a snare around the neck of the alpha female African Wild Dog as a pack moved around me in Kruger National Park. I was able to notify the section ranger pretty quickly with GPS coordinates. She was found, darted, the snare removed, treated with antibiotics and released with her pack the next day.

9: Coyotes are so special, highly intelligent and adaptable. They know to look for cars and cross roads when it's safe. They are wild relatives of our domestic dogs, but they don't do well in captivity and don't make good pets. This gorgeous guy lives near me.

10: My dogs...yes, I had to include them!

"But Karen, I don't see any HYENA photos?!?!?!"

That's because hyenas are not dogs. They are in their own district family, Hyaenidae, and are actually more closely related to cats than dogs!

From encouraging one 15 year old’s dreams, to making millions happy just because she laughed, Dolly was one in a million. The world is a lot darker now without her light.

Rest in Peace, Dolly.

I can make your Monday better but you’ll have to rotate your screen.

Does watching baby hippos play in a pool help?

I thought so. Have a great day, and come see hippos with me sometime soon.
