Eight hundred years ago, men came here to leave the world behind.

They climbed the cliffs above Amalfi and entered a monastery suspended between sea and sky. Days were spent in prayer, nights in silence. The only constant was the view. Eight centuries later, surprise! The view is still here.

So are the cloisters. The frescoes painted in 1223. The church. The lemon groves tumbling down the cliffs.

What changed is that the monks' cells became hotel rooms, the silence became luxury, and travellers now arrive not seeking solitude, but one of the most extraordinary stays on the Amalfi Coast.

The guest list over the years has included Victor Hugo, Elizabeth Taylor and generations of Grand Tour travellers chasing beauty long before Instagram existed.

Here, among all the luxury, one thing remains unchanged. A Franciscan friar still walks the cloisters, greeting guests and sharing stories the monastery's past.
