Benvenuti in Kenya

Gerenuk Safari,8 Days DAY 1: ARRIVE IN KENYA Arrive at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport this evening where you’ll be met after passing through customs and transfer to overnight at the Stanley Hotel. [No meals] DAY 2:MT. KENYA Drive this morning to the flanks of Mt. Kenya and the picturesque hillsides of the Mt. Kenya Safari Club. Enjoy an afternoon dip in the pool, walk on the expansive grounds, or a visit to the animal orphanage located on the property. This is an excellent way point to spend an evening before continuing on to the Samburu game reserve. Overnight at Mt. Kenya Safari Club. [BLD] DAY 3 & 4: SAMBURU GAME RESERVE Continue the drive north this morning (3 hours) to the Samburu Game Reserve, where you will meet your guide and embark on your first game drive in the Samburu Reserve. This semi-arid northern reserve is a haven for rare species such as the gerenuk, the endangered Grevy’s zebra, the unique Somali ostrich, and the reticulated giraffe. These species are not found in any of the other reserves you will be visiting, so your guide will do his best to make sure that you spot these regional specialties. Along with these Northern species you’ll also be on the lookout for lion, cheetah, oryx, and the numerous elephant herds that criss-cross the reserve. Leopards are often spotted in the trees along the Uaso Nyiro River and bird life is abundant, with over 400 species in the area! Overnights at Samburu Intrepids. [BLD] DAY 5, 6, 7: MAASAI MARA RESERVE Transfer to the airstrip this morning for your short flight to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. No other place on earth compares with the multitudes of wild animals found in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, part of the vast Serengeti ecosystem spanning Kenya and Tanzania. During the summer months (approx July – September), the Great Migration comprised of 1.5 million wildebeest and several hundred thousand zebra make the Maasai Mara their home. Here herds of zebra, wildebeest, and topi mingle on the short grass plains keeping an eye out for numerous predators, including lion, cheetah, leopard, and hyena. Outside of the migration months the plains are home to resident herds of ungulates as well as all of the predators, who do not migrate. Maasai giraffe and impala graze in the woodlands and hippos and crocodiles bask along the shores of the Talek and Mara Rivers. Overnight for three nights at Mara Intrepids Camp. [BLD]DAY 8: DEPARTURE Take your last game drive in the Maasai Mara this morning before transferring to the airstrip for your return flight to Nairobi. The Park covers an area of 20,720 sq km. For administrative convenience the Park is divided into two parts namely Tsavo Westand Tsavo East. The Park contains an enormous variety of wild animals among them the greatest concentration of Elephants in the world estimated to be 20,000 +. Much of the landscape is thorn scrub and for the larger part of the year is dry. The western part is much hillier where the Ngulia Hills form a spectacular backdrop to two of the Lodges in park. Our major area of concentration will be Tsavo West which covers 7065 sq. Km and the famous Mzima springs where an observation tank is put in one of the pools to enable visitors to go into the glass tank and watch Hippos, crocodiles and many species of fish doing their everyday routine. The area is also known as the Land of lava referring to Chaimu and Sheitani lava flows which are about 200 years old. The man eating lions which prayed on Linesmen building the Uganda railways at the turn of the century made this area very famous. This area was also the location of the 1996 shooting of the movies:- The Ghosts and the Darkness staring Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer from the non fiction book- the Man Eaters of Tsavo by Lieutenant Colonel J.H Patterson. This area also used to be a a classic hunting ground for renown big game hunters such as the famous Denys Finch Hattons. Spanning the vast plains of Tsavo and lying within view are Mt Kilimanjaro, the Taita Hills and Chyulu Hills which all contribute to make unique habitats and the entire ecosystem which extends into the neighboring country- Tanzania
