💼 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱? 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗛𝗥... 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿? ✈️

Corporate travel is undergoing a quiet revolution. Finance teams are no longer just reviewing expense reports — they’re shaping policies, selecting platforms, and using real-time data to steer decisions. 🧮🤖

But as the numbers take the lead, the question becomes: what’s the cost to traveler experience, flexibility, and long-term strategy?

This shift brings important questions to the forefront:
💲 Is corporate travel becoming too finance-driven — and at what cost?
⚖️ How can organizations balance control with traveler satisfaction and productivity?
🎯 Are we overlooking the role of travel as a strategic enabler — not just an expense?

These are exactly the kinds of questions AIEST has tackled for over 70 years — combining insights from academia and industry to explore tourism systems, behavior, and institutions.

📍 At the upcoming 𝗔𝗜𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀 (Aug 24–27, 2025), discussions will extend to how corporate travel fits within broader tourism dynamics — from policy to practice, tech to human needs.

🗓️ Even though submissions are now closed, you can still attend and participate in the conversations.

📖 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆: 𝗔𝗜𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 🌍

In 1946, before AIEST was even formally founded, two Swiss pioneers—Prof. Walter Hunziker and Prof. Kurt Krapf—recognized a critical gap: tourism, though booming, lacked scientific grounding and a platform for informed debate.

Their solution? Launch R***e de Tourisme (later Tourism Review)—a 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗹, 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 for sharing ideas, research, and practical insights on tourism. This journal laid the foundation for tourism as a respected academic field and helped catalyze the creation of AIEST in 1951.

For decades, Tourism Review served as the 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜𝗘𝗦𝗧, with many of its presidents and secretaries general acting as editors-in-chief. It played a unique role in bridging 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲, offering space for both peer-reviewed research and expert commentary from practitioners.

📈 By the 2000s, the publishing landscape had changed. To secure Tourism Review’s future in an increasingly digital, competitive, and global environment, AIEST made a strategic decision:
👉 𝗜𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟴, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.
This ensured broader distribution, enhanced visibility, and faster editorial processes—while maintaining editorial influence until 2016.

Today, Tourism Review continues to thrive globally. AIEST members remain actively involved in shaping the field, serving on the editorial boards of many 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 and contributing across disciplines.

💡 As we reflect on this legacy, we’re curious:
𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗜𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺?

🏙️ 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗯𝗻𝗯 𝗜𝘀 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 — 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀

Airbnb has relaunched its 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 and introduced 𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗹-𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀—from private chefs to massage therapists—in over 260 cities. The move marks a major push to position itself as a 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹-𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺, not just an accommodation provider.

(Source: Skift, https://lnkd.in/dVUaSunk May 2025)

🧭 At the same time, many cities—Paris included—are actively debating or tightening 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹s due to rising concerns over 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆, 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

This dual trend raises important questions for tourism researchers:
🔍 How are platforms adapting their models in response to regulation and shifting demand?
🔍 What’s the future of urban tourism when experience delivery is both hyper-local and globally intermediated?
🔍 How should cities govern innovation in tourism without stifling value creation for residents and visitors?

These are exactly the kinds of issues we’ll discuss at 𝗔𝗜𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀 (𝟮𝟰–𝟮𝟳 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁)—a city at the heart of the global short-term rental debate and a testing ground for integrated urban tourism strategies.

📚 Join the conversation and contribute to the critical thinking our sector needs.

𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀, 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲?

As highlighted in a recent 𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘧𝘵 article, the ripple effects of the 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗨.𝗦. 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 may extend far beyond trade. Rising costs, political uncertainty, and shifting public sentiment are already influencing 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. For tourism, the impact may be indirect—but it is real.

At 𝗔𝗜𝗘𝗦𝗧, we believe this is exactly where 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲-𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 is needed most. Our community of scholars, professionals, and policymakers is uniquely positioned to contribute to a 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 and to 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.

What can the hashtag community contribute?

• 𝗘𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 of how geopolitical and economic shifts affect tourism demand and destination image
• 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁s to support businesses and governments in decision-making
• 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 on how destinations respond to political volatility or trade-related disruptions
• 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 that bridges research and real-world governance

The upcoming AIEST 2025 Conference in Paris offers a space to explore these questions, particularly in the stream on
“𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 – 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀.”

We encourage members to submit or share work that links academic insight to practical and policy outcomes.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺?
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?

Let’s keep this conversation going—online and in Paris.

A recent article by The New York Times highlights a sharp decline in foreign travel to the United States—raising important questions about how policy, perception, and politics shape global tourism flows.

At AIEST, we see this as a moment to reflect on the broader dynamics affecting our field:
🔹 How do shifts in international relations impact traveler behavior?
🔹What role do researchers and practitioners play in responding to changing global tourism landscapes?
🔹How can tourism systems remain resilient in the face of political uncertainty?

We invite the AIEST community to share thoughts, research, and perspectives:
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠? 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠?

Join the conversation—let’s shape the future of tourism together.

A growing number of travelers say they are worried about feeling unwelcome or unsafe in America and are reluctant to support the economy of a country that may be destabilizing other nations.

What is the AIEST?

What is the AIEST?

The AIEST is the oldest international association of scientific and practical experts with particular interest in tourism. It is a unique social network with around 300 members in 49 countries on all continents. This network is devoted to an interdisciplinary approach to serving the needs of research in tourism. It includes an Academic as well as a Practitioner stream that allow an international scientific and practical exchange. The AIEST has contributed much to an objective understanding of the modern phenomenon of tourism, and to the scientific acceptance of studies in this field. Its members help to pinpoint the latest developments and trends in tourism, and to devise farsighted solutions for new problems as they arise.

How does the AIEST work?
