Patience at the hollow.

The African Harrier-Hawk — also known as the gymnogene — is one of Africa’s most unique raptors. Unlike most birds of prey, it has double-jointed legs that allow it to bend them backwards and reach deep into tree cavities, cracks, and nests to pull out prey.

I watched this individual for about 15 minutes, carefully inspecting this hollow trunk above the water — possibly checking for an Egyptian Goose nest. Slow, methodical, almost surgical in its movements.

In the end, it flew off — perhaps the cavity was empty this time. But moments like this show that hunting is often about patience and persistence, not just the final strike.

A quiet moment… then color in motion.

The Lilac-breasted Roller (Coracias caudatus) is often called one of Africa’s most iconic and most beautiful birds — and when it takes flight, it’s easy to see why. Shades of lilac, turquoise, and deep blue unfold in an instant, turning a simple take-off into a brief flash of living color.

For a second, the grassland holds its breath… and then the roller is gone again.

Before sunrise in the Mara.

In the cool blue moments before the sun touches the plains of the Mara Triangle, the savannah still belongs to the night. This is when male lions are most at ease — moving through their territory, listening, scenting the air, reminding the land who holds it.

Two males and a female moved through the grass that morning, their faces marked with new and old scars — the quiet history of rivalries, hierarchy, and survival. This male lingered a little behind, clearly not the first choice of that female, or not anymore at least…

He stood quietly in the half-light, watching, completely present. For a moment, the plains felt timeless — just a lion, the open grass, and the first colors of a new day.

On World Wildlife Day, a reminder that these ecosystems and landscapes are not ours to own, but to protect. 🌍🖤🐘

Dawn with the Kings of Nakuru.

At 6am, in the soft blue light of Lake Nakuru National Park, we found them — two male lions and their pride, still wrapped in the quiet of early morning. For an hour and a half, we simply stayed. No rush. No other vehicles. Just us, the lions, and the rising sun.

Male lions are most active in the cool hours before the heat settles over the savannah. As the light grows, they slow — grooming, stretching, reaffirming bonds within the pride. To witness that gentle transition from night into day is to see a different side of strength: calm, composed, deeply present.

Golden light caught in their manes. The females moving softly through the grass. The males standing watch — powerful, yet unhurried.

Moments like this remind me that safari is not about chasing sightings, but about patience, respect, and sharing space with wild lives on their own terms.

Family of Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) with some Elephants in the background.
They roam freely, a sight that unfortunately becomes more rare these days…

This is the first post of many from my latest privately guided safari to Kenya. We‘ve had so many special and unique sightings over the past 3 weeks, choosing a first post wasn’t easy. Stay tuned for more and I hope you like this image 😇

First Safari of the year is about to start and I thought it is time to create a dedicated Account for my newly registered company, Roaring Skies Private Safaris GmbH and the work I do as a Private Safari Guide.

This new page is where I‘ll share what happens behind the scenes:

The Animals, The People, The Places & The Moments that make a private safari special!

Welcome to Roaring Skies Private Safaris.

I‘ve spent several years organizing bespoke Safaris and guiding my guests through Africa‘s wild places.

Designing Safaris for everyone is my goal. From luxury, bespoke safari itineraries to purely photographic safaris where the focus lies on wildlife photography, to birding trips to Africa‘s top birding hotspots or even low-budget but even more adventurous camping and self-drive safaris.

Our Safaris are always conducted in harmony with nature. Our guiding is of highest standards to ensure that our safaris are always executed in a ethical way. We don’t disturb the ecosystem and it’s inhabitants. We don’t bait. We don’t damage land and environment. We want to make sure that future generations can also admire the incredible beauty of wild Africa!

My old account is still in use and I will continue posting, but focusing more on my photography and not on my guiding.

Stay tuned for more!!

At the end of this year, I would like to share something extraordinary with you. Be aware, these are by far not my best images, but the story behind them makes me smile every time I see them. When I visited the Maasai Mara National Reserve for the first time during my field guide training, we were able to observe a very special Zebra with a rare stripe pattern. As you all know, the stripe pattern of each Zebra is unique, like a fingerprint, and can therefore be used reliably as an identification feature for individual animals. When I visited the Maasai Mara with my guests in October 2024, we passed a Zebra and, upon closer inspection, the pattern looked very familiar to me. Something that I have seen before. I was sure! Of course, it is far from the so-called polka dot pattern that “Tira“ had, for example. But still, the pattern is very dark, with many dots instead of stripes. I have not seen a pattern like this ever again.

The first two pictures are from 2024, the last two from 2020. If you look closely and compare them side by side, you will see that this has to be the very same individual!

I wish you all a happy New Year.
A new year full of health, joy and happiness! ❤️
