"This trail is easy. That slope is steep." - Says WHO?

Some people struggle on the Stoos Ridge. Others run back and forth on it all day. Same trail. Completely different experience.

That's the problem with statements like:

"This trail is easy, that one is hard."
"This slope is almost flat, that one is very steep."

These are meaningless without context - because they depend entirely on who's saying them, not on the terrain itself.

Here's the fix.

The Swiss hiking scale (T1-T6) only describes the terrain. A T2 trail can wreck Peter, while a T5 trail feels easy to Marc. (Full breakdown in the comments.)

So how do you actually judge if a trail fits your level?

Use Swiss Topo (web or app). A few clicks gives you precise numbers - distance, elevation gain - like in the picture below. No guessing, no vague opinions. Just data.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about why wild camping is allowed in Norway but generally prohibited in most parts of Switzerland.

Many people argue that this is simply because Norway is much larger, has a lower population density and fewer tourists. But that comparison is misleading. Norway and Switzerland simply have different laws, traditions and regulations regarding access to nature and camping.

For example, Switzerland has remote areas with very few or even virtually no tourists where wild camping is still prohibited. Even if the Jungfrau region had only 400 visitors a year instead of 4 million, wild camping would still be prohibited. The number of tourists is not what determines the rule.

So let’s not confuse the two issues. Norway has its rules, Switzerland has its own. Wherever you are, respect the local regulations.

I spent 8 days in Norway last year and one thing really struck me.

A beautiful meadow? I parked my car there overnight.
A nice forest? I put up my tent and washed in a river.
A small free spot next to a road? Perfect, I slept in my car there too.

Of course, I wasn’t the only person wild camping.

This is possible thanks to Norway’s "Right to Roam" (Allemannsretten), which gives people broad rights to access and enjoy nature.

What surprised me most is that in Norway, this freedom extends even to famous and crowded tourist destinations.

And if you have a...big project, all you need is a shovel: dig, do your business, cover it up and move on.

Switzerland, on the other hand, is quite the opposite.

What feels completely normal in Norway can be restricted or prohibited in Switzerland.

Two beautiful countries, but very different attitudes towards nature and outdoor freedom.
