HYROX Berlin - mixed doubles

The ad read “Female Wanted, age 45-54, HYROX Berlin mixed doubles. Goal: qualify for world championships and podium potential. All expenses paid.”

The answer was obvious 😜 so off I went to my second race at the Berlin HYROX with Lars from Denmark.

We met at the hotel the night before and spent the following day getting to know each other and talking all things HYROX.
We didn’t even know how each other ran or moved apart from a quick transitions practice during the warm up.

Then off we went, running at a fairly quick pace for the first lap and second team into the ski erg. We shared the stations fairly evenly and held our run paces.

Our goal was to finish in under 1:03 and ultimately come first in order the qualify for worlds. Unlucky for us, the current world champ in the 50-54 age group also raced in the mixed doubles on another day and completely smoked us by 4mins so we ended up in third place with a time of 1:02:02.

As a first race together I was very happy with this result, even if we didn’t qualify. A good starting point for us and hopefully we can race together next season and snag that world championships qualification early in the season.

Winning my first HYROX Pro back in January was a very proud moment for me! It qualified me for the Hyrox World Championships taking place in Sweden in June.

l was super happy not only for the performance I was able to give on the day but for sticking to my consistent training plan over the past 18 months.

Aerobic engine, anaerobic intensity, and sprint power must all be trained so that you can maintain a high intensity through the entire race.

One week after my race in Amsterdam I did my first Pro division race in Turin.

I was feeling apprehensive about the sleds being so much heavier than in the Open division, particularly as they had been tough during training. In the worst case I was ready to go harder on the stations that are the same as the Open division, like the burpee brand jumps, the ski and the row.

To my surprise and joy I managed to push the sled unbroken for the first length and then only take one break each length after. This gave me an enormous boost of confidence and let me enjoy the race a bit more. However, the sled pull was so hard! It spiked my heart rate and took a lot out of me.

Next was the burpees and I managed to get a decent time there. No issues on the row, voice ever present in my head on this station, “it should feel like you’re cruising”. Much easier said than done!

The kettlebells at the Farmer’s carry are so much easier to carry than at the NonStop gym. The shape and the fact they are caked with chalk from many others before me, allowed me to go unbroken!

Then onto the lunges. Ouch, what a killer that is! No real issue there but they definitely slowed me down for last run into the wall balls.

I managed the first 25 unbroken then it was 5-10 at a time until the last 15. My judge encouraged me from there to not stop, just keep going until 100. So that’s what I did, finishing in 1:14:04, and putting me in first place in my age group! WTF?! Two wins in two weeks, my first Pro race and I win my age group, and to top it all off, I qualified for the World Championships in Stockholm in June. I’m very very happy and grateful for what my body has allowed me to do thus far! 😊
