ON OUR RADAR |
Newly opened last weekend, Chesa Marchetta, the second hotel from ’s Artfarm, is tucked into the mountain village of Sils Maria, the storied cultural heart of Switzerland’s Engadin Valley.
Intimate and art-led, with just 13 individually appointed rooms, it feels more like a private house than a hotel. Under the direction of Paris-based studio , the bones and heritage of the 16th-century building have been pristinely honored. Carved pine-beam ceilings, hand-painted murals, and a restrained palette are layered with local Engadin antiques, bespoke pieces by regional artisans, and an art collection that mixes local artists with masters both old and new (curated immaculately, of course, by Hauser & Wirth). The 46-seat restaurant, which opened in December, follows the same philosophy: locally sourced, beautifully presented, and thoughtfully restrained.
The result is understated, assured, and rooted in warmth — that elusive European brand of Alpine cool we’re always chasing stateside. We’re thinking of it as a thoughtful counterpoint to the glitz of glamorous Saint Moritz (just 20-minutes away), and a natural pairing for travelers who value design, culture, and hotels that don’t need to try very hard to stand out.
