BUON FERRAGOSTO ☀️
Do you know why the Ferragosto holiday is so important in Italy?
The Ferragosto festival, also known as the Assumption of Mary, is a tradition rooted in ancient Rome and Christianity. The term 'Ferragosto' comes from the Latin 'feriae Augusti', which means 'Augustus' holidays', a period of rest and celebrations instituted by Emperor Augustus in 18 BC.
Initially, this holiday was associated with celebrations for Emperor Augustus, culminating on August 15th with spectacles, games, and banquets. Over the centuries, the festival also took on a religious meaning, becoming the Assumption of Mary, which commemorates the ascent of Jesus's mother to heaven.
Today, the Ferragosto festival is a time of joy and sharing, where families come together to spend time, have outdoor picnics, and enjoy the summer weather. It's also an opportunity to take a break from work and daily routines, reflecting on the importance of rest and celebration during festive moments.
