During the past couple years, I started a new project that I haven't really published so far, but which has great potential! It is the new Hybrid Wood/Carbon option for tops, backs, and sides—basically the ultimate solution I can now offer for people who travel frequently in different climates. Best of all, these models deliver an incredibly clear, responsive, and super balanced sound with endless sustain!
The Hybrid Wood/Carbon models feature laminated tops, backs, and sides, with the outer layers made of fine woods and a thin middle layer made of carbon fibre fabric. This results in a stiff sandwich construction that is much more resistant to humidity changes than solid wood, while offering an incredible tap tone. The final stiffness of the top is kept to the same deflection as my solid wood tops, but the sides turn out significantly stiffer.
Another great feature is that you can combine different woods on the inside and outside for different sound flavours. For the back and sides, I have been using black-coloured Pear veneer on the inside to make the hybrid models easily distinguishable from the solid wood models.
For those who remember, I offered the B-Compact Small models as all-solid carbon fibre models for quite a few years, but I never truly enjoyed working with carbon as a material. The great thing about this new approach is that I don't have to sand carbon fibre at all during the building process. The only time I encounter carbon dust is when cutting the binding channels on the body. Other than that, the entire body construction and building process, including the bracing, remains the same as on my solid wood guitars, which is a major advantage from a builder's perspective.
This option has not yet been added to the website (which is long overdue for an update anyway, but that's a different story ;)), but all B-Compact models are now available as Hybrid models without any limitations on wood combinations!
Here is a demo by great fingerstyle guitarist Conor Thomas 😊
