Chile's northernmost city, only 11 miles south of the border with Peru and the driest inhabited place on Earth, in the Atacama Desert.
It was bloody hot!
Morro de Arica is a steep hill/cliff that looks down over the city. We took a taxi to the top, where there is an enormous Chilean flag, a statue of Christ and a small military museum.
We walked down a steep path and into the city, looked around the small cathedral, the plazas and the Bolognesi area of small lanes filled with bars and restaurants.
Before the ship left, we were treated to a local dance group who put on a shoe for us on the dockside.

On arrival in Coquimbo, the Third Millennium Cross, which represents the Catholic religion, dominates the scenery from the top of a hill.

Today's excursion was La Serena on your own. La Serena is the next city to Coquimbo, just along the bay, but, because they have both expanded so much, only one street now separates them.

We were dropped off by Plaza de Armas and then had 3 hours on our own. We decided to walk down to the seafront, about 30 minutes away, to see the lighthouse. From there, we could see our ship at Coquimbo across the bay and the cross on top of the hill.

We walked back to the plaza, past replicas of famous statues which were donated by Italy, and then we wandered around the streets of La Serena before returning to Coquimbo.

Wanting to see the cross up close, we took a taxi up the hill. There were lots of religious sculptures depicting the crucifix, and the views over the bay and the cities were gorgeous.

On our second day in San Antonio, we decided to do the same trip as yesterday, Santiago on your Own, as we'd seen some things that we'd not had time to do.
This time, the coach took us on a different route to the city, via the pretty Casablanca Valley wine region.
In Santiago, we walked to Cerro San Cristobal and took the funicular to the top of the hill, a much bigger one than yesterday.
At the top was a small church and a terraced area with steps up to a large white statue of the Virgin Mary. At 880m high, the city looked so far away.
To get down, we took the cable car, and then we walked to the bus stop and rode back to Plaza de Armas.
With 45 minutes to spare until our coach ride back, we had a look around the Metropolitan Cathedral and the rather grand Correo (post office).

We had two days in San Antonio and decided to take an excursion: Santiago On Your Own. A coach took us the 70 miles from the port to the Chilean capital, left us to explore on our own for five hours, and then took us back to the ship.
As we approached the city, we could see the magnificent Andes.
Santiago was a lovely city.
We got on the hop-on-hop-off bus at Plaza de Armas, and stayed on for the whole loop, getting our bearings. Then we walked to Cerro Santa Lucia, a park, garden and castle with viewing terraces which looked over the skyscrapers to the mountains.
We saw the Palacio de la Moneda on the walk back to Plaza de Armas.

Bruggen Glacier, also known as Pio XI Glacier, is about 66 km/41 miles long, the largest glacier in South America and the longest in the southern hemisphere outside of Antarctica. Strangely, this glacier is advancing rather than retreating, due to high snow accumulation and surge-type behaviour.
We had to get up early to see this one, hence the light was not as good, but this glacier was more blue than yesterday's and had more ice floating around in the fjord.
The captain turned the ship 360° so that everyone on board could get a good look.

Punta Arenas is on the Strait of Magellan in Patagonia.
The ship anchored offshore and we took a tender boat to the pier.
First, we walked up some steps to a viewpoint. A little further along the street was Signos de Mundo (Signs of the World).
In the city centre, we had a look in Sacred Heart Cathedral and wandered round the Plaza de Armas, where there was a monument to Ferdinand Magellan, and some dogs were following the mounted police wherever they went. 🤷🏼‍♀️
We then walked to Cementerio Municipal de Punta Arenas, a huge cemetery with some massive mausoleums, before taking the coastal road back to the ship. Along the seafront there were painted murals on the walls and sculptures dedicated to explorers and navigational things.

After going round Cape Horn, we sailed through the Beagle Channel, along the border of Chile and Argentina. The channel was named after HMS Beagle, which surveyed the area with Charles Darwin on board. It was stunning, and my photos don’t do it justice.

We were lucky with the weather as we sailed around Cape Horn, the southernmost headland of South America, where the Atlantic and Pacific meet, and only about 400 miles from Antarctica.
What an amazing place!
