This week, we’ve been looking beyond Aysén.

Part of designing a journey is knowing the territory, but it is also about staying connected to the people, places and ideas that are shaping travel across Patagonia.

This week took us to Bariloche, travelling through the Andes and lakes aboard the Cruce Andino, and to Expolagos Patagonia 2026, where we had the opportunity to connect with tourism professionals and discover new possibilities for the journeys we design.

We’re always looking for experiences, connections and ideas that can add value to our clients’ journeys — especially when they allow us to see Patagonia from a different perspective.

There are already a few ideas taking shape behind the scenes. We’ll share more when the time is right.

For now, here’s a little glimpse of where the work took us this week.

A journey through Patagonia is rarely remembered as a list of places.

Years later, you may not remember every viewpoint, every kilometre or even the name of every road. But you might remember the conversation you had with a local guide, the unexpected stop when the weather changed, a quiet morning by the lake or the feeling of standing somewhere completely unfamiliar.

These are the moments that give a journey its meaning.

At AysenJourneys, we believe a well-designed trip should leave enough room for those stories to happen. The route matters, but so does everything that happens along the way.

Because sometimes, the best parts of travelling through Patagonia are the ones you never planned for.

For a region as remote as Aysén, the way people arrive matters.

Balmaceda has been the main gateway to the region for decades, connecting Aysén with the rest of Chile and making it possible for travellers from around the world to reach a territory where distance has always been part of the experience.

Now, that gateway is changing.

The new passenger terminal is not simply a larger building. It is part of a broader process of improving the infrastructure that supports a region where tourism has been growing, while many of its destinations remain naturally remote and sparsely populated.

From our perspective, this is an important step. Aysén has extraordinary landscapes and experiences to offer, but the development of tourism also depends on having the infrastructure and services that allow visitors to reach the region comfortably and safely, while continuing to respect the characteristics that make it unique.

And there is something we particularly like about this moment: the region is preparing for more visitors without needing to become a different place.
The forests are still there. The fjords are still remote. The roads still follow the geography. And nature still sets the pace.

For travellers planning to discover Aysén in the coming years, this means a region becoming better connected while retaining the character that brought them here in the first place.

A little look at what has been happening behind the scenes at AysenJourneys.

Winter may be a quieter time in Patagonia, but there is always plenty happening behind the scenes. This month, we've been working on our sustainability commitments, preparing our application for Chile's S Certification, updating our website and getting everything ready for the next travel season.

Paula has also been taking part in industry events and conversations around sustainable tourism, while we continue working with our local partners and refining the journeys we design for the season ahead.

A journey begins long before reaching Patagonia.

It also begins with understanding how we want to move through the places we visit.

Our Responsible Traveller Code is part of the work we have been developing at AysenJourneys to make our commitment to responsible tourism more concrete and transparent. It is grounded in the principles of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, adopted by the World Tourism Organization in 1999 and endorsed by the United Nations in 2001.

For us, responsible travel is not about telling people how they should experience Patagonia. It is about encouraging a relationship with the territory based on respect, awareness and reciprocity.

Over the next few days, we'll be sharing the commitments that make up our Code in Stories.

Patagonia looks like this right now: quiet, snowy and almost completely still.

But in just a little over a month, winter will begin to give way to spring. The days will grow longer, the snow will start to retreat from the valleys and Patagonia will slowly begin to change its colours again.

A new season is approaching, and with it, a different way of experiencing Aysén: long days, changing landscapes, fewer visitors early in the season and that unmistakable feeling of having the road a little more to yourself.

Luxury doesn't always come with marble floors or white-glove service.

Sometimes it looks like having an entire trail to yourself.

Sometimes it's having enough time to stop, watch a condor glide overhead or enjoy a conversation without looking at the clock.

For us, that's what travelling through Patagonia has always been about.

Winter is when Patagonia settles into one of its quietest rhythms.

The roads grow emptier, many lodges close their doors until spring and the pace of the region slows once again. Snow settles across the mountains, wildlife continues its daily routines and the landscape returns to a stillness that feels almost untouched.

It's a season defined by calm, where nature quietly takes centre stage and Patagonia reveals one of its most intimate, remote and untamed faces.

By the time spring arrives, these valleys will once again welcome travellers from around the world. Until then, winter reminds us that this landscape has always belonged to nature first.

Long before synthetic outdoor gear arrived in Patagonia, wool was an essential part of everyday life.

It offered warmth, durability and protection against the cold, but it also became part of the cultural identity of the region. In many rural communities across Aysén, the knowledge of spinning and weaving has been passed from one generation to the next.

Today, those handmade pieces tell a story that goes beyond craftsmanship. They speak about adaptation, resilience and the close relationship between people and the landscapes they inhabit.
