In March 2017, in Kamchatka, I guided a strong, motivated group from Switzerland. The goal was to climb and ski Koryaksky volcano (3456m), an iconic ski-mountaineering peak. It was early in the season for climbing such a tall volcano, but we were lucky with the weather and snow conditions and managed to summit in one day- a 11-hour push covering over 2,500 vertical meters. Then followed a breathtaking descent through all kinds of snow, from icy hard to breakable crust, ending with 1,500 vertical meters of cold-smoked powder.
Nine years later, we met again, this time in the Tien Shan Mountains, where we spent nine beautiful days climbing and skiing peaks over 4,000 meters. Despite the crew getting a bit older (including myself 😁) motivation and energy hadn't diminished at all!
So, I'm looking forward to another adventure, hopefully sooner than in nine years.

After spending three days on Talgar Pass (3200m) and skitouring the area, we headed higher into Tuyuksu valley and stayed in a mountain hut at 3380m, right at the base of Tuyuksu glacier. The next day, we set out to climb Molodezhnyy Peak (4147m). The climb was mostly straightforward, with a few technical spots, and was rewarded with an amazing panoramic view over the Trans-Ili Alatau and Kungey Alatau ranges. On the way down along the northwest ridge, we encountered every kind of snow, from wind-affected powder to wet, slashy snow with some almost unskiable breakable crust in the middle. What a day!

Highlights from a recent ski-mountaineering trip in the Trans-Ili Alatau range, Tien Shan. It was the first day, and it paid off big. Climbing up to the Till glacier from Talgar pass offered breathtaking views of the range and Almaty city, along with several . All this in mid-May!

First impressions after 8 days in Tian Shan, Trans-Ili Alatau range. We got lucky with the weather and snow conditions, climbed and skied several 4000+ meter summits, and completed multiple high-alpine routes. All this was accompanied by breathtaking scenery and plenty of good jokes. Thanks to the crew!

Memories of the week - and hiking in Kamchatka. My guiding career started in 1998 with hiking trips and volcano climbs, activities I have been doing since I was a child. I've guided many summer seasons on backpacking trips in remote parts of Kamchatka, showing my guests the wilderness of my homeland. The last trip I led was a full west-to-east traverse of the Ganslsky Range in 2019. Afterward, COVID and other factors ended my summer guiding in Kamchatka. Still, I hope to return there someday.

This week - memories from Kamchatka spring 2017. An incredible season with several teams from around the world - Dutch, Canadians, Americans, Spanish, and even Chileans! From April powder on volcanoes and forest to volcano summits and skiing on glaciers inside the crater of an active volcano. Simply !

I first visited Japan in 2011 and fell in love with the nature and snowy mountains of Hokkaido. The landscape reminded me of my homeland, Kamchatka, but it felt less wild and had easier access to spots. Since then, I have returned several times to enjoy the great skiing, fantastic food, and to learn more about Japanese culture. I split my photos into two posts because I have so many cool pictures to share!

A while ago, I realized just how many mountain photos I have accumulated over the past 15 years of guiding and skiing. Some of these photos are featured on my website, climbtoski.com, but I still have many more I want to share. So, I’ve decided to start a series showcasing my mountain photography.

The first post in this series will focus on heliskiing at Lake Baikal. My company began operations there in November 2018, becoming the first regular heliski operators in the region. We ran it for two seasons until COVID hit. We returned in 2021, but our operations in Russia ended shortly thereafter.

Despite a sad final, it was a remarkable experience filled with learning, valuable lessons, enjoyable times with our guests, and, of course, fantastic powder skiing.
