One of Richmond parks finest specimens from last years rut. Really looking forward to this years battles as I am going to hire the New Sony A1 MK ll and their new whopper of a zoom the 400-800 mm, and hopefully invest in the kit for my future filming and stills work.

Chilling by Lake Sarmiento

Sipping coffee this morning selecting images from Patagonia for a planned exhibition in my local town and had to stop and relive my day following this incredibly beautiful Puma and her 3 young cubs at the time.

My dear friend and incredible Torres del Paine guide Rodrigo Lizama of Patagoniantravel.com we’re out on a drive when he spotted this female up on a hill with her 3 cubs just soaking up the winter sun.

We sat and watched them for hours until eventually they headed down the hill to the edge of the Lake where the cubs disappeared into the maze of rocks and caves and the female wondered to the edge to drink. You can easily see how big she is as she is full of milk for her young. The light was perfect the water so blue and the subject! I think she was the most beautiful and powerful female Puma I ever had the immense pleasure of spending time with in all my time in Torres del Paine.

It broke my heart when my time on that particular trip ended, I wanted to stay and document her cubs journey to adulthood, which despite being the Apex predator is not always guaranteed, always time for another adventure in Patagonia🙏

Go Organic

Coffee like multiple other crops in the world are sprayed with all manner of nasty toxic chemicals. The science says coffee has many beneficial properties, but how many of you drink organic coffee , and if not why not ?

The herbicides, pesticides and chemical fertilisers etc that crops get sprayed with are harmful to the soil and insects and ultimately ends up in you. In my town there are loads of coffee bars and sadly only one sells organic coffee. The truth is that a lot of people don’t care what is in the food they consume, and many of the owners don’t want to fork out that little bit extra , expensive to purchase than non-organic coffee this is due to the higher costs associated with organic farming practices, including certification, labor, and potentially lower yields, but a lot of customers are waking up to the benefits of consuming a healthier coffee, not to mention the benefits to the environment.

Everyone wins.

This print of an Andean Condor from my last trip to Patagonia just arrived at the local printers SK Picture Framers Ltd in Blandford.

My aim was to print it life size which for this male is 3.2m wide just over 9ft, but due to the fact it was shot on a 22megapixel micro four thirds sensor in the Panasonic G9 camera with a Panasonic - Leica DG Vario- Elmer 100-400mm F4 - 6.3 zoom, I kept the size down to 2.7 m. Amazing result considering the sensor size and number of pixels available.

A very rare pair of Deer indeed.

These 2 beauties are Southern Andean Huemul ( Hippocamelus bisulcus) . About two thirds of the estimated surviving 1500 are found in southern Chile and the balance in southern Argentina. A plethora of problems threaten their very survival including habitat loss, farming, illegal poaching, and in some areas where cattle have gone feral and introduced Red Deer numbers crossover with native Huemul, the females Huemul that are pregnant have higher incidents of miscarriage.

Their numbers have recovered in some places but they face a real uphill battle to get any where near historic numbers. Over the years I have had the immense pleasure thanks to my dear friend and guide Rodrigo Lizama of spending time observing them in some of the more remote areas of Torres del Paine National Park.

Rodrigo and I are putting together a tour for the Autumn of 2026 for a small group ( max 8 ) of photographers/ filmmakers wishing to visit this stunning destination in southern Patagonia, which will coincide with the autumn/ fall colours that are simply stunning.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for any information you might require about planning a trip to the region, it’s wildlife or the personally guided bespoke tours that can be arranged throughout the year.

If you are going to travel that far spending your hard earned money, you want to be in the best hands.

I have made the journey many times over decades and Rodrigo & Cecilia @ Patagoniantravel.com are simply as good as it gets🙏

I have forgotten how many trips I have made to these parts over the years, but one thing is for sure one could never make too many.

During my first photographic adventure back in the summer season of 1998, I was very fortunate to meet a local guide and logistics expert Rodrigo Lizama and wonderful wife Cecilia, with their kindness, generosity and not to mention profound knowledge of the region I owe much of my success to them.

For anyone planning a trip to Patagonia, be that an individual or group, you need not look any further than Patagoniantravel.com

Regardless of whether or not you are a professional photographer or film camera operator, solo or a crew, Rodrigo has every aspect of your journey covered, be that in and around Torres del Paine National Park or in wider Patagonia, covering both Chile and of course Argentina. He has a huge web of connections and decades of experience in the region and his modern fleet of luxury vehicles can cater for any individual or groups of up to 30.

It is a long way to the Fin del Mundo ( End Of The World ) as the locals fondly refer to it, so it is a wise move to place yourself in the best hands, I did, and 27 years later I am still returning.

Do not hesitate to call me in the UK on my mobile 07448132271 if you would like to talk about any aspects of a trip you are planning, I would be happy to help. The tours can be arranged for any month of the year, including winter, which is my favourite time of the year. Rodrigo can be reached in Chile, details below.

Close-up in flight

Andean Condor

The Condor reaches maturity, at 7-8 years, it’s plumage has gone through its Juvenile brown stages and ends in full black and white. I think at times they lend themselves to being displayed in black and white prints, especially when conditions are overcast and the sky is white /grey.

My only regret on this last trip to film and photograph was the fact I was using a micro four thirds sensor, so it lacks the quality for blowing up prints or shooting higher quality footage on a larger full frame 35mm sensor.

I will be back there next winter and through other seasons over the next couple of years with new equipment to carry on working on a book and film project about these amazing aerial Leviathans.

The worlds largest bird coming right at YA. The longest wingspan of any bird is held by the Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) at a recorded 3.63 meters, but the Male Andean Condor with a recorded 3.3 meter span and its larger body means it is the largest overall. While filming and photographing them, I have had dozens fly right over my head as they are very inquisitive.
