Torres del Paine is OPEN all year.

Many visitors think Patagonia is only accessible in the summer but with near empty trails, snow dusted peaks and a higher chance of wilderness days the area is highly appealing as a winter destination. The Torres del Paine National Park is open all year, with a few restrictions. Winter visitors can embark on unforgettable adventures such as hiking the popular W trail (with a guide) or snow shoeing through ancient forests. There is a higher chance of spotting elusive wildlife such as pumas in their snowy habitats, and of course for photographers, the soft winter light presents unlimited opportunities.

Scattered across Patagonia’s vast landscapes are hundreds of small structures; from windswept puestos used by gauchos and baqueanos to humble huts that shelter trekkers, Patagonia’s rural architecture is as varied as its landscapes. These small structures, often simple, sturdy and built with purpose reflect a bygone era shaped by isolation, extreme weather and tradition. Each has a story, born from the needs of the land and the people who live and work here.

Puestos, or estancia outposts, often no more than a one room shelter with a wood burning stove for heat, cooking and hot water and a place to sit and sleep, are used by gauchos during long stretches of work on vast estancias. They offer essential refuge from Patagonia’s fierce winds and unpredictable weather.

High in the mountains, alpine huts serve trekkers and climbers, often placed at strategic points for rest and safety.

Whilst these simple structures still exist on many of the estancias in the region, some of them have evolved beyond their utilitarian roots. Abandoned or unused huts have been restored as eco casitas or cabins for use by guests in search of solitude and a glimpse of Patagonian rural life. What was once shelter for survival is now part of Patagonia’s unique charm—linking people to place, past to present. This transformation reflects both a growing appreciation for Patagonia’s cultural heritage and a shift towards sustainable, small scale tourism.

Whether its a lone puesto on the steppe or a cosy cabin nestled in a native forest, these structures continue to connect people to the land in ways that are both practical and poetic.

As a local operator with strong ties to the region we have always endeavoured to get off the beaten path into the traditional Patagonia. One such hut that stands out in our minds is Refugio Zapata, before it was sadly destroyed many years ago. This remote hut was hidden among native forest inside Torres del Paine. A magical stopover on the way to Pingo Glacier and Mirador Zapata and a wonderfully authentic shelter and place to cook or lay a camping mat.

In a world where densely populated cities and constant connectivity have become the norm, the wild, untamed landscapes of Patagonia provide a vital antidote, offering the peace and rejuvenation that only nature can provide.

We can help you discover it.

Why not don crampons and enjoy a walk on the ice during your trip to Torres del Paine, a truly unique and exhilarating experience.

In partnership with an experienced and longstanding local operator we can include this in any hiking or bespoke tour for those aged 14 - 65 years. You should be in good physical condition and pack appropriate clothing (we provide full details). You will be provided with a helmet, crampons, an ice axe, a backpack and a harness - the use of which will be covered in the detailed safety briefing.

The trip usually runs in the morning and afternoon, each session lasts around 5 hours with approximately 2.5 hours on the glacier exploring the ice caverns, crevices and incredible icescapes. This trip is not just available to hikers of the W and Circuit trails, you can also enter the area via the Grey Boat that operates various departures during the summer, we often include it in our bespoke multi-day tours. It is an exciting activity to include in a family trip for those travelling with older children.

We are happy to advise on suitability.

What is a Gaucho? And why are they so important to the Patagonian culture?
We were the first company to offer long riding trips in the area and our ground-breaking itineraries, quality guides, professional service and conscious promotion of the local gaucho culture have made these some of the world’s most unforgettable riding experiences.
Guided by an expert Chilean guide and looked after by baqueanos, the famous cowboys of the south, Blue Green Adventures will take you deep into this riders’ paradise away from the main trails and into the Patagonian wilderness.

We would give this trip the highest possible rating! It was truly a wonderful adventure. The beautiful, wild nature of Patagonia is hard to describe. From our first contact with BlueGreen Adventures in planning the trip all our questions were answered thoroughly and quickly.

Of course, the stunning scenery was a highlight. We were very fortunate to have some beautiful weather. It was great to have the first day at the Estancia to recover from travel. The hiking was stunning. Our guide, Rubian, was exceptional. He was knowledgeable, professional, and fun! We had never used a guide before, always did everything ourselves, but he made every transition and detail go so smoothly. His dedication and love of the land was always clear. And of course, our driver Cristian, was always there to pick us up.
The hotels were very nice and unique with excellent food. It would have been nice to maybe stay an extra day Hotel del Torres.

This trip went beyond our expectations. I would (and already have) recommended BlueGreen Adventures to our family and friends.
Thank you for everything! Our pictures and memories are amazing. We hope our paths cross again.
