Today we celebrate International Shorebird Day, a day to learn about and appreciate the species that travel enormous distances between their breeding and feeding grounds.

Enrique Couve invites us to learn more about these remarkable birds, their journeys, and the ecosystems they depend on. He also takes us closer to the story of one of the great travelers of our coasts: the Arctic Tern, an extraordinary traveler capable of connecting continents through its migration.

Off Punta Norte in Argentina's Valdés Peninsula, Orcas (Orcinus orca) use a unique hunting technique called intentional beaching. It is the only location in the world where this behavior is routinely observed.

Rather than relying purely on instinct, this strategy is culturally transmitted. Matriarchs teach young calves how to ride the waves onto the shore to hunt sea lions and wriggle back into the water without stranding themselves.

Standing at the base of a windswept cliff in winter, patience is the only real requirement. High above the snow-covered slopes, sheer rock walls shelter one of Patagonia's most profound wild encounters: the communal roosts of the Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus).

Observing these master gliders up close requires reading the landscape from a respectful distance. High on vertical rock faces, every wing stretch, roosting interaction, and flight decision tells a story about how these massive birds navigate the extreme southern winds.

Hundreds of miles off the Chilean coast, the volcanic ridges of the Juan Fernández Archipelago rise abruptly from the deep Pacific. This extreme isolation created one of the most extraordinary evolutionary sanctuaries on Earth.

Exploring Robinson Crusoe and Alejandro Selkirk islands feels like entering a world untouched by time. In the native tree-fern forests, you can spot the brilliant Juan Fernández Firecrown (Sephanoides fernandensis). Higher up along the jagged ridges, the critically endangered Masafuera Rayadito (Aphrastura masafucrae) makes its home. Off the coast, pelagic seabirds skim the ocean swells while the endemic Juan Fernández Fur Seal (Arctocephalus philippii) navigates the surf.
