The impressive bearing of a Horned Coot (Fulica cornuta) in the Chilean Altiplano. A specialist of a handful of wetland localities through the highlands of sw Bolivia, nw Argentina and specially Antofagasta, in northern Chile. This mighty coot is usually seen only around San Pedro de Atacama over 4000 meters above sea level.

🌿 Meet the Peale’s Dolphin 🐬 - Specie of the week!

Peale’s Dolphin (Lagenorhynchus australis) is a cetacean species found in the coastal waters of southern South America, especially in the Patagonia region and adjacent areas. It is the most commonly spotted dolphin during our expeditions in the Strait of Magellan.

The Peale’s dolphin is a medium-sized dolphin, reaching lengths of 1.8 to 2.6 meters. It is known for its acrobatic behavior, often performing jumps and twists in the air.
During the expedition “Pumas, Penguins, and Whales,” our team enjoyed a spectacular display of Peale’s dolphins in front of the boat.

🌿 Meet the Masafuera Rayadito 🐦 - Species of the week.

The Masafuera Rayadito (Aphrastura masafuerae) is a critically endangered and endemic species of Alejandro Selkirk Island in Chile. This small, energetic bird inhabits the dense forests of Dicksonia and Lophosoria ferns. Its existence is threatened by predation from invasive species and the destruction of its natural habitat.

During the recent “Juan Fernández Birding Expedition,” our team was fortunate to have an unforgettable experience observing a pair of Masafuera Rayaditos beneath the majestic endemic Canelo tree of Juan Fernández (Drimys confertifolia) and among the ferns. What an unforgettable experience!

Humpback whales undertake an epic journey each year, traveling around 8,000 kilometers from the warm tropical waters of Panama, Colombia, and Ecuador to the Strait of Magellan. In tropical waters, these marine giants find the perfect environment to mate and give birth to their calves, while in the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Strait of Magellan, they feed on krill, sardines, and shrimps. 🐋🦐🐠

Apus apus, Common Swift. So graceful, agile and fast. This extraordinary creature has very powerful senses as is able to forage for tiny aero-planktonic prey at incredible speed, while glides up high in the sky. Always a delight to see and a true photographic challenge when you try to capture it. A few months ago in the Swiss Alps nearby the mythic and inspiring Matterhorn.

Apus apus, el Vencejo Común. Tan elegante, ágil y rápido. Esta extraordinaria criatura tiene sentidos tan poderosos que es capaz de detectar pequeñas presas aero-planctónicas, mientras planea a una velocidad realmente increíble. Siempre es un placer verlo y un verdadero desafío fotográfico cuando intenté capturarlo. Hace unos meses en los Alpes suizos, cerca del mítico e inspirador Matterhorn.

An striking penguin of the genus Pygoscelis, a krill-specialist and a northern sub-Antarctic breeder, Gentoo Penguin is such an elegant and acrobatic creature, when leaping out of the surface in the urgent need to arrive to its breeding colonies.
These shots were taken in the fantastic Sea Lion Island, during one of our regular trips to the Falkland Islands, in the South Atlantic.
