Heading north, on the road to San Pedro.
Miles of silence, endless skies, and a desert that seems still… but isn’t.

Beauty lives in the contrasts:
the heat of the day and the sudden cold at dusk,
the dryness of the land and the colors that appear when you least expect them,
the solitude of the road and the deep connection you feel with everything around you.

Riding it on a motorcycle changes everything.
You don’t just see the landscape—you feel it: the wind, the scent of the earth, the vastness surrounding you.

Some places you visit… others you truly experience.
This is one of them.

La Serena is one of the most attractive coastal cities in northern Chile, known for its colonial architecture, long beaches, and relaxed atmosphere. What makes it especially beautiful is the combination of ocean views, clear skies most of the year, and a well-preserved historic center with stone churches and wide palm-lined avenues. Nearby, the Valle del Elqui adds a privileged natural setting, perfect for travelers who enjoy unique landscapes.

For motorcycle travel, La Serena is a highly appreciated destination because the ride from Santiago — about 470 km (292 miles) — is mostly along Route 5 North, offering a comfortable journey with long open stretches and changing scenery between valleys and coastline. The trip usually takes around 5 to 6 hours under normal conditions.

What makes it special for riders is the mild climate, the ocean breeze, and the chance to combine coastal cruising with inland adventures. Overall, La Serena stands out for its natural beauty, good road connectivity, and enjoyable riding routes, making it an ideal motorcycle getaway from the capital.

Carelmapu: a different stop to add to your motorcycle route in southern Chile

If you are looking for a different destination for your next motorcycle trip, Carelmapu is one of those places that stands out precisely because it remains largely undiscovered. Located in the Los Lagos Region, facing the Chacao Channel, this small coastal town is perfect for riders who want to leave the main tourist routes behind and experience southern Chile at a slower pace.

Although the ride from Santiago is over 1,000 kilometers, Carelmapu is well worth considering as part of a longer southern route. The distance becomes part of the adventure, with changing landscapes, weather, and that unique feeling of traveling deeper into less explored territory. From Puerto Montt, the town is only about 80 kilometers away, making it an ideal weekend escape or a strategic stop before crossing to Chiloé.

The road to Carelmapu is calm and lightly trafficked, ideal for relaxed and enjoyable riding. Open fields, coastal views, and wide skies set the tone as you approach a place where time seems to slow down. Once you arrive, the bike can rest while you explore on foot and take in the surroundings.

Carelmapu’s appeal lies in its authenticity. Life here is closely tied to the sea, with local fishing traditions, simple yet flavorful seafood, and peaceful sunsets over the channel. There are no crowds or large resorts—just a genuine coastal town that rewards those who make the effort to get there.

For riders who enjoy discovering places with character, Carelmapu is a destination worth adding to your map. It may be far from Santiago, but that distance is exactly what helps preserve its charm and makes the journey truly memorable.

Sewell: A Motorbike Journey to Chile's Mining History
Are you looking for a route steeped in history, stunning landscapes, and the roar of your engine as the only soundtrack? The old mining camp of Sewell, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an unmissable destination waiting for you high up in the Andes Mountains, and riding there on a motorbike is a memorable adventure.

The Town and Its History
Sewell, famously known as the "City of the Stairs," was founded in the early 20th century to house the workers of El Teniente, the world's largest underground copper mine. Its unique architecture, adapted to the steep mountain slope, is a fascinating testament to the ingenuity and life of a high-altitude mining community. Wooden buildings painted in vibrant colours, a giant central staircase that acts as the town's spine, and a feeling of time standing still, all give Sewell an unmatched atmosphere.

Distance and the Motorbike Route
Sewell is located about 150 kilometres south of Santiago, and approximately 60 kilometres east of Rancagua. The journey from the capital takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and, of course, how much you want to savour the ride.

The real magic begins after Rancagua. The route, known as the Carretera del Cobre (H-25), takes you directly into the mountains. It's a road that ascends gradually, offering increasingly impressive panoramic views as you leave the central valley behind. The road is generally well-paved, with curves that become tighter and more exciting as you gain altitude. Important: Access to Sewell is restricted, so you must book a guided tour in advance, either with the Sewell Foundation or an authorized tour operator, to enter and complete the historical tour.

Why Go by Motorbike?
Riding the route to Sewell on a motorcycle is not just a transfer; it's part of the entire experience. The motorbike gives you an intimate connection with the environment: the fresh mountain air on your face, the scent of earth and forest, and the satisfaction of mastering the ascent curves. The road to Sewell is a pleasure for any motorcyclist, a perfect blend of well-maintained asphalt and dramatic scenery that culminates in this dreamy "ghost town."

Prepare your high-altitude gear, fuel up, and embark on this route. Sewell is not just a destination; it's a journey into the heart of Chilean history, experienced from the thrilling seat of your machine.
