The call —*"磨剪子嘞，戗菜刀！"* (*"Mó jiǎnzi lè, qiàng càidāo!"*)—is one of the most iconic, evoking the sounds of a bygone era when craftsmen and peddlers roamed the hutongs (narrow alleys), offering their services with rhythmic, melodic cries.
This particular chant was used by knife sharpeners, who carried their grinding wheels and tools, announcing their presence to households needing their blades honed. The sing-song cadence was both functional (to attract customers) and artistic, reflecting the musicality of Beijing's street culture.
