Learning about a Chongqing attraction each time: Jiefangbei

Jiefangbei: The Soul of Chongqing ✨

China's only monument for the victory of the War of Resistance. Built in 1941 as the "Spirit Fortress," this 27.5m tower stands at Yuzhong's busiest crossroads, surrounded by skyscrapers like WFC. By day, it pulses with urban energy; by night, neon lights paint its silhouette against the stars — a perfect blend of history & modernity.

📸 Photo Tips• Low-angle: Frame with skyscrapers for contrast• Dusk backlit: Let golden hour outline the silhouette• Long exposure: Use a tripod for neon glow & light trails• Outfits: Minimalist vintage or bold streetwear

📍 Practical Tips• Metro: Lines 1/2, Jiaochangkou or Linjiangmen Stn (3-5 min walk)• Best time: Early morning for full shots; dusk/night for neon scenes• Nearby: Walk to Hongyadong, Daijia Alley, Kuixing Building

Gongtan Ancient Town: A Hidden Gem Even Locals in Chongqing Rarely Visit
Located at the confluence of the Wujiang and Apeng rivers in Youyang County, Gongtan Ancient Town is perched on steep cliffs and boasts a history of over 1,800 years. It takes about three to four hours to drive from downtown Chongqing. The final stretch is a winding mountain road along the Wujiang Gorge, offering stunning scenery right from your car window.
The Riverside Street
The entire town is built along the cliffside. The main street undulates with the terrain, flanked by stilted houses on one side and the Wujiang River on the other. The cobblestone path stretches for over a kilometer. Historically prosperous due to Sichuan salt transport, the street is dotted with fire-sealing walls, traditional courtyards, and ancestral halls, with carved doors and windows still intact. The renowned painter Wu Guanzhong once described this place as "a Tang Dynasty street, a Song Dynasty city, and the home of our grandparents." Standing on that street, you will truly feel the weight of these words.
Stilted Houses
Over 400 wooden stilted houses jut out from the cliffs, with the river flowing directly beneath them. They are still home to real residents and haven't been renovated into tourist traps. Just walk quietly and respect the locals' peace.
Wujiang River Cruise
There are cruise boats taking you through the "Wujiang River Gallery" section, where you can spot ancient Ba people's hanging coffins and the Tianmen Cave. If you have enough time, taking a boat ride is highly recommended—the perspective is entirely different from walking on the streets.
What to Eat
The small local eateries serve Wujiang River fish and Tujia-style smoked bacon—authentic, hearty dishes that locals eat daily. The flavors across different shops are quite similar, so you can just step into any one of them.
Best Time to Visit
In the early morning, mist rises from the river, making the silhouettes of the stilted houses appear and disappear. This is a much better time for photography than high noon. Waiting for the sunset to hit the cliffs in the evening is also well worth it. Ideally, stay for a night so you won't miss either of these beautiful lighting conditions.
A Quick Note
The town itself isn't large; you can walk through it in two to three hours. But if your only goal is just to "finish" the walk, it might be better not to go at all.

🌿 A Hidden Sanctuary of Mountains and Water: The Natural Charm of the Miao

Nestled along the Wu River and backed by Mount Mowei, Jiuli City is embraced by swirling mists, perfectly capturing the poetic essence of "a city where mountains and waters intertwine." Above lie layered karst peaks; below flows the emerald Wu River Gallery. Here, nature and human culture blend in perfect harmony. From the viewing platform of the Jiuli Palace, the mountain city shrouded in morning mist resembles a fairyland. At dusk, the setting sun gilds the stilted wooden houses (Diaojiaolou), and the shifting light paints a breathtaking ink-wash landscape.

🎭 Miao Culture: A Living Heritage
As an "open-air museum" of Miao culture, Jiuli City astonishes the world with three Guinness World Records:
Nine Gates: Nine cascading archways winding along the mountain ridge. Each gate is carved with Miao epics and totems, symbolizing the migration history of the Jiuli tribe.
Jiuli Palace: A towering 99-meter complex of stilted houses built entirely without nails using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. Its golden roofs and soaring eaves reflect beautifully in the Dragon Pool, earning it the title of "the pinnacle of Miao architectural art."
Jiuli Divine Pillar: A 24-meter white marble totem pillar intricately carved with 36 Heavenly Spirits and 72 Earthly Deities, embodying the Miao people's profound reverence for nature and their ancestors.

🎭 Intangible Cultural Heritage: An Immersive Feast
Chiyou Sacrificial Ceremony: On the 8th day of the 4th lunar month each year, tens of thousands gather at the ceremonial square. Miao warriors in ancient armor form nine grand formations, recreating the majesty of the primordial tribe.
Intangible Heritage Workshops: Craft your own batik or Miao embroidery, or try ancient papermaking techniques in the Sanmiao Corridor. Every touch brings you closer to the warmth of millennia-old craftsmanship.
Folk Performances: Inside the Miao Opera House, the melodious Lusheng (traditional pipe) accompanies the graceful Golden Pheasant Dance. During the evening bonfire party, Miao locals and tourists dance the Baishou Dance together, with the firelight illuminating everyone's smiling faces.

What’s Worth Exploring in Yuzhong District? Read This Before Your Chongqing Trip 🗺️
Last week, a friend visiting Yuzhong District asked me, "What else is there besides Hongya Cave?"
I simply shared this guide with her, and we ended up walking all day without taking any transport.
Yuzhong has a high density of attractions, yet 99% of tourists only visit two of them.
Here is the itinerary I believe is truly worth your time:
Mountain City Trail
The most underrated gem in Yuzhong. This pedestrian route winds through the old town, passing by residential buildings with laundry hanging out to dry, decades-old teahouses on the slopes, and sudden, breathtaking gaps revealing river views. There are no tickets or strict boundaries; just step in and observe how locals live. If you aren't rushing, this trail is more rewarding than any ticketed scenic spot.
Baixiangju (White Elephant Residence)
You can easily pass by this during your trail walk. Due to the unique terrain, it looks like giant building blocks stacked from the outside. Inside, every casual snapshot makes for a great composition. Real residents still live here, so please keep your voice down as you explore.
Kuixinglou Building
Located at the very tip of the Yuzhong Peninsula, where the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers merge right before your eyes, with the lush green mountains of Nan'an District across the water. Many don't make a special trip here, but once you arrive, you'll feel like you've truly understood what "Mountain City" means.
Shiba Ti (Eighteen Steps)
After renovation, the old lower city area retains its original alley layout. The vibe changes drastically between day and night—it only gets interesting when the lights come on in the evening. Visiting at dusk is definitely more worthwhile than daytime.
Huguang Guild Hall
There aren't many Qing Dynasty historical buildings left in Chongqing, making this one of the rare spots where you can see the original architecture. A quick stroll inside to admire the ancient stage and courtyard takes about half an hour.
Luohan Temple
Hidden within the bustling Jiefangbei commercial district, this temple offers peace and quiet amidst the chaos. The five hundred Arhats each have unique expressions. It's free to enter, and a quick walk-around takes about 30 minutes, making it a perfect stop along the way.
Jiefangbei (Liberation Monument)
It’s fine for a quick photo op, but the surrounding commercial area isn't much different from other major cities. If you're short on time, just breeze past it and save your energy for the spots mentioned above.
Hongya Cave
The best time to visit is around 7:30 PM, when the sky is still bright but the lights are already on. The blend of twilight and illumination creates that classic Chongqing postcard image.
⚠️ Pro tip: Don't take a taxi directly to the main entrance. Walk over via Qiansimen Bridge instead; the panoramic view from the bridge is far superior to the front gate.
Save this post and pull it up for reference before your trip! 📌

🎞️ Eling Erchang: Finding a Sense of Time Travel in Chongqing

Only after visiting did I realize that Eling Erchang is more than just a photogenic spot.
Before going, my impression was the same as many others: a trendy check-in spot, great for photos, and a quick visit before moving on.
But after truly exploring the area, I found it has much more texture and depth than I had imagined.
The Past and Present of Erchang
Officially named "Chongqing No. 2 Printing Factory," it was originally the Central Bank of China printing plant during the Republic of China era. After years of abandonment, it was transformed into a cultural and creative park in the 2010s.
The brilliance lies in the fact that the renovation didn't erase the traces of time. Rough concrete pillars, mottled iron pipes, and old staircases were preserved exactly as they were, while new cafes, independent bookstores, and design studios were seamlessly "embedded" into these historic structures.
Standing inside, you can see both the rusted industrial relics and the exquisite modern cafes from the exact same perspective. The collision of the old and the new feels completely natural, creating an illusion of traveling through time.
The Real Experience of Wandering Around
The park isn't actually huge, but it has a strong three-dimensional layout. The buildings extend upwards along the sloping terrain, offering new surprises on every level. As you walk, you might unexpectedly stumble upon a hidden corner.
Rooftop Terrace
It is completely open and free! The view is spectacular, offering a distant look at the mountains and the lush greenery of Eling Park opposite. Visiting in the morning is highly recommended; it's quiet, less crowded, and the occasional morning mist provides soft, filter-like lighting. Although it gets more crowded in the afternoon, it’s never overly packed.
Interior Corridors
The original architectural textures are preserved, and the light and shadows on every staircase and corridor are unique. It’s perfect for casual snapshots; no need to pose deliberately, as the natural light serves as the best reflector.
Creative Shops & Cafes
Scattered across various floors, you'll find shops selling handmade jewelry and design books. The quality of cafes varies, so it's best to check reviews before ordering. Think of them as a good place to rest your feet when you get tired from exploring.
Suggested Duration
A careful tour takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, which is sufficient. There's no need to allocate half a day, as that might overestimate the park's size. However, if you're a photography enthusiast, you might want to spend more time on the rooftop waiting for the sunset or morning glow.
Tips | Practical Tips
Outfit Advice:
The park is next to Eling Park and accessible on foot, but the slopes are incredibly steep! Make sure to wear comfortable flat shoes or sneakers. Never wear difficult-to-walk-in high heels just for the sake of photos.
Crowd Avoidance Guide:
It gets really crowded on weekend afternoons. If you want to capture stunning photos without crowds, it's best to visit on weekday mornings (Monday to Thursday).
Nearby Attractions:
If you have enough time, Eling Park is right next door, less than a 20-minute walk away. You can easily drop by to enjoy the night view from Kansheng Pavilion.

Wulong Earth Rift: You Won't Realize How Breathtaking It Is Until You Walk Inside 🏞️

Before heading to the Three Natural Bridges, I never expected to casually add the Earth Rift to my itinerary. After checking the map and realizing they were close by, I just went with the flow.
I couldn't quite imagine what an "Earth Rift" would feel like before entering, but the very first stretch of the trail completely shattered my expectations.

🌍 What is the Longshuixia Earth Rift?
Literally, it is a crack in the earth. The canyon reaches a depth of nearly 200 meters at its deepest, but is only a few to dozens of meters wide. Walking inside, the cliffs on both sides rise almost vertically, leaving only a slender strip of blue when you look up at the sky.
This rift was formed by tectonic movements. Millions of years ago, the rock layers fractured, and water continuously eroded the area for countless years, eventually shaping it into its current form.

🚶‍♀️ What Does It Feel Like to Walk Inside?
The entire boardwalk is built along the bottom of the canyon. It is about 2 kilometers long, and a one-way walk takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours.

The deeper you go, the narrower the rift and the dimmer the light. In some sections, the rock walls on both sides are only three or four meters apart. Walking in the middle, you have a narrow strip of sky above and an eroded stone riverbed below. Occasionally, waterfalls cascade down from the cliff tops, splashing into mist at the bottom of the gorge. The air is completely filled with moisture and a cool chill.
There is no grand sense of openness; instead, there is a feeling of being squeezed. But it’s not an uncomfortable pressure—it’s the kind that leaves you speechless and makes you walk in quiet awe.

📍 Cliff Waterfalls: Several waterfalls plunge directly from the cliff tops. When the wind blows through the canyon, the water scatters into a fine mist. Standing below and shooting upward creates a highly impactful visual.
📍 The Narrowest Point: There is a section where the canyon walls pinch in to their absolute limit. You instinctively slow down here, and many people stop to take photos.
📍 Canyon Stream: The water winds its way between the stone walls. The riverbed, carved by millions of years of erosion, features incredibly delicate textures that look beautiful in close-up shots.

🌉 How It Differs from the Three Natural Bridges

The vibes of these two attractions are completely different—
The Three Natural Bridges are grand, open, and require you to look up with unobstructed views.
The Earth Rift is confined, deep, and enveloping. Walking inside, your field of vision is limited to the cliffs on both sides and that thin strip of sky above.
If the Three Natural Bridges are about "looking up," the Earth Rift is about "walking deeper in." The two experiences complement each other perfectly, making Wulong absolutely worth a dedicated trip.
