With the Mosuo people, we are reminded to be grateful for the natural world.

Wonders of Yunnan are at Lugu Lake to observe the Mountain and Lake Circling festival. The festival has its roots in the Mosuo people’s deep reverence for Lugu Lake, which they refer to as “Mother Lake.” For generations, the lake and surrounding mountains have held an important place in Mosuo spiritual and cultural life, with the annual tradition expressing respect and gratitude for the lake and nature in general.

In the morning, Mosuo people from across the region gather to take part in the traditional practice of turning the mountains and circling the lake. Participants travel around the landscape in a clockwise direction, offering prayers and seeking blessings for peace, health and a good harvest.

The celebrations continue with Jia Cuo, a traditional Mosuo group dance in which participants hold hands and move together in a circle or spiral formation, led by a flute player. The festival also features blessing ceremonies led by Daba religious practitioners, horse riding, pig-trough boat processions, and barbecues on the mountainside.

How can one lake shape the culture of an entire community?

This week, the Wonders of Yunnan team took a trip to the Yunnan-Sichuan border, between which lies the gorgeous Lugu Lake. Spanning 50 km², the lake is hemmed in by steep mountains and forested slopes on either side.

The landscape here is absolutely breathtaking, as the region is protected for its ecological importance. Lugu Lake is renowned for its remarkably clear water, which is clean enough to drink straight from the lake.

One of the best ways to experience the lake is from the water itself. Local boatmen cross it in narrow wooden canoes traditionally known as “pig-trough boats.” These boats take visitors out across the lake to its islands, including Liwubi Island, where a Tibetan Buddhist monastery overlooks the water.

But perhaps the most fascinating part of Lugu Lake is the people who live around it. The area is home to the Mosuo people, a community known for its matrilineal traditions and the unique practice of “walking marriages.” Their traditions have created a social structure that has evolved quite differently from many other communities in China.

How should we remember those who came before us?

This week, Wonders of Yunnan are in Kunming for China’s annual Ghost Festival. After the vibrant celebrations of the Yi Torch Festival, this spiritual event gives everybody a chance to reflect, think of our loved ones and honour those who have passed.

It is traditionally believed that during the seventh lunar month, spirits of the deceased are able to return to the world of the living. On this day, descendants prepare food offerings, burn incense, and burn paper models of items that spirits may need in the afterlife, including money, clothes, houses, cars and even electronics.

The streets go eerily quiet at night, as people choose to stay indoors so as not to disturb the spirits.

Even in a bustling modern metropolis like Kunming, Chinese cultural practices such as these are preserved in homes and out in the street, proving that the traditional way of life is still everywhere, not just in the temples.
