The Year of the Horse: a special year for pilgrims at Mount Kailash

Today marks the beginning of our Senior guide Sonam’s eighth kora of the season which began in May, and over the coming weeks he will continue guiding and walking alongside pilgrims from around the world through one of the Himalayas’ most sacred landscapes.

This exceptional Year of the Horse has also seen unprecedented demand for our Mount Kailash journeys. All of our 2026 Kailash group tours are now fully booked, except for our final two departures on 7 September and 12 October, which still have a few places remaining.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the Year of the Horse is considered especially auspicious for making the pilgrimage around Mount Kailash. It is believed that the spiritual merit gained from completing the kora—the sacred 52 km circuit around the mountain—is multiplied many times over during this year. As a result, tens of thousands of pilgrims from across Tibet, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and beyond make the journey to this extraordinary sacred mountain.

For many Tibetans, completing even one kora is the fulfilment of a lifelong aspiration. Others return year after year, driven by faith, devotion, and a deep spiritual connection with Kailash.

We wish Sonam and all pilgrims a safe journey, good health, and favourable weather on the sacred mountain.

Most travelers visit Tibet only once in a lifetime. That’s why we believe it deserves more than a rushed itinerary spent mostly on the road, covering long distances while visiting only a few places. We recommend longer journeys that allow for a deeper, more meaningful experience. With more time to explore, you return home with a genuine understanding of Tibetan culture, breathtaking landscapes, and sacred sites. It is also important to keep in mind that Tibet lies at very high altitude. Rushing through the journey and crossing 5000m mountain passes too quickly greatly increases the risk of altitude sickness, which can seriously affect your comfort and overall experience. A well-paced itinerary allows proper acclimatization, helping you stay healthy and fully enjoy the journey. Our Mt. Everest group tours —starting in Lhasa and ending in either Lhasa or Kathmandu— are designed with this philosophy in mind.
