An Autumn Encounter at Langyatai
In September and October, Langyatai is wrapped in rolling seas of cloud, ethereal and otherworldly. This ancient terrace — known for Qin Shi Huang’s three inspection tours and Xu Fu’s legendary voyage east — unfurls both autumn romance and the cultural legacy of the Qin and Han dynasties. Standing atop the terrace, you see Long Bay stretching below, mountains rolling into the distance, and the vast open sea.

Outside it looks European, inside it feels Chinese — and in its courtyard, it is Qingdao. This is the liyuan, a building type unique to Qingdao.
From the street, it looks like a European apartment block; inside, it is a Chinese courtyard enclosed on all four sides — Western attire outside, a Chinese core within. Shops below, homes above. For generations, Qingdao families shared one courtyard, living close and warm. Today, Guangxing Li is a design hub, and the Twelve Li on Huangdao Road has a theme for every courtyard. The old liyuan are reopening. They keep the memory — and head for the future.

The 3rd Liyuan Comedy Festival is bringing ten days of nonstop fun to the Shangjieli historic district. Across its “one street and two zones,” 28 comedy genres and more than 1,000 performances are taking over the neighborhood. International troupes from France, Italy, Cuba and beyond are popping up on street corners—so you never know when you’ll stumble upon a great show.
