[A Waterside Stage: Tracing the Origins of Yue Opera in Shaoxing]
The 6th China Yue Opera Festival is set to open in Shaoxing. Born a century ago in the fields and villages of Shengzhou, Shaoxing, Yue Opera has since grown into a national-level intangible cultural heritage renowned both in China and around the world.
A journey to trace the roots of Yue Opera begins with two villages. Dongwang Village is the birthplace of Yue Opera, where the first notes of this art form were sung more than a hundred years ago; Shijia’ao Village is known as the birthplace of all-female Yue Opera, where graceful, melodious singing still seems to linger among the white walls and black-tiled roofs. Step into Yue Opera Town and listen to a classic aria in an ancient theater; not far away, hundreds of treasured exhibits at the Yue Opera Museum quietly tell the story of this art form’s century-long evolution. This route takes you from Yue Opera’s origins to its flourishing present, inviting you to experience its past and present firsthand.
Travel Guide: Fly to Shanghai Pudong International Airport or Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, then take a high-speed train to “Shengzhou Xinchang Station” and transfer to a local bus to reach the destination.
