With the pandemic finally behind us we're excited to see travel slowly picking up and people exploring rural China again. Although life seems to have restored back to 'normal'; the pandemic has left a mark on multiple aspects of our lives.

One change we've seen is an ever faster increase in remote-workers and particular those who choose to work in a peaceful, natural settings similar to Laojia.

At Laojia we’ve seen several guests make Laojia their long term home/office. Their unique experiences inspires us to promote long term stays.

The first step in playing a supportive role in the village development is to truly understand the local needs. Our recurring (virtual) tea sessions are one way in which we catch up on life in the village and deepen our understanding of how villagers need support.

Some key points from last talk:

1. Villagers are very satisfied with the local education and healthcare (8/10 satisfaction rate). Particular the local health care has seen a substantial increase in quality of services over the last 5 years.

2. It was nice to hear that the issue of 'left-behind children' (LBC) isn't a serious problem in Langshi, with most of the children still living with their parents; and the children who's parents work elsewhere are taken care of by community members. Some even observed increased levels of “optimism” and independence in the local LBC.

3. Economic stability remains the biggest concern. Crop failures of their fruit trees, together with the tourism industry collapsing, created a contraction of the local economy of 40-50%. Their hope is to have an outside organization/government support them in growing a stable crop and reducing their risks by providing purchasing deposits.

Together with the villagers m of Langshi, Laojia老家 is working on creating project proposals to address the above issues and attract outside support.

The warm-hearted women of Laozhai are truly one of a kind.
Show above is Auntie Zhao Jian Ying. She has been a friend of Laojia since the first time we entered the village back in 2014 and has been a part of our team ever since. She makes sure the guesthouse is kept clean and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Next time in Laozhai make sure to pay her a visit, and if you're lucky you'll be able to taste some of her incredible 'You Cha' 油茶...
