(Nannopterum brasilianum) is a very common species across much of the Americas and is frequently seen in Bahía Solano, in the Chocó region of Colombia, where rivers, estuaries, and the ocean create an ideal habitat for this bird.
It is an excellent fisherman, capable of diving underwater and swimming using its feet to chase fish. For many local fishermen, it is also a good indicator of fish presence: when several cormorants are fishing in the same area, it usually means there are plenty of fish there.
Unlike many aquatic birds, its feathers are not completely waterproof, which is why it is often seen perching with its wings spread open to dry in the sun after diving.
This species is also quite tolerant of human presence and can often be found near docks, mangroves, rivers, beaches, and estuaries. It is also common to see them resting or sleeping in groups on trees, rocks, or structures near the water.
It is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable and easy to observe birds in the natural environment of Bahía Solano.
