Our participation at the Global Wildlife Fair in India was a wonderful opportunity to connect with like-minded organizations, build valuable partnerships, and showcase the natural beauty of Colombia and our conservation efforts.

Following the event, we joined a FAM tour through Gujarat, gaining meaningful insights into the region’s wildlife and culture. From the salt desert of the Little Rann of Kutch, where Indian Wild Ass (Equus hemionus khur), herds roam freely, to sightings of Asiatic lion cubs (Panthera leo persica) in Gir National Park, and the open grasslands of Velavadar, alive with blackbucks (Antilope cervicapra) and harriers, each landscape revealed a distinct facet of India’s biodiversity.

Our appreciation goes to Tourism Gujarat and Asian Adventures for their coordination and efforts to highlight the region’s tourism potential.

Until about 1900 the Santa Marta Sabrewing was described as fairly common, and it was recorded intermittently until 1946. It was not recorded again until 2010 and was then again "lost" until 2022, when its survival was confirmed by photographic evidence of an individual male found by chance. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species originally assessed the Santa Marta sabrewing as Near Threatened, then in 2000 as Endangered, and since 2020 as Critically Endangered. It has a very small range and is thought to number fewer than 50 mature individuals. About 85% of the original vegetation within its range has been destroyed by logging and conversion to agriculture, grazing, and human habitation. What remains is degraded and fragmented.

Today, we had an amazing surprise when Raupers recorded this beautifull Santa Marta Saberwing male with during one of birding tours in the Santa Marta Mountains at

We are very happy about this new record.

The Velvet-purple Coronet, a medium-sized hummingbird, appears to be blackish in dim lighting. However, when viewed from the correct angle, it transforms into a stunning gem with a purple belly and crown, turquoise sides, and greenish wing coverts. Observe the bright white flashes in its tail. Like other coronets, this bird raises its wings for a brief moment when it lands, revealing its rich chestnut underwings. Both males and females have similar appearances. The species has a limited distribution in western Colombia and Ecuador, where it is generally uncommon in moist cloud forests and edges within the lower subtropical zone.

The Buff-tailed Sicklebill hummingbird is found in the foothill forests along the eastern slope of the Andes. It has a distinctive bill and is often seen near "lobster claw" Heliconia flowers. The bird's song consists of soft chirps, which it sings from a hidden perch. It does not visit feeders.

Join our Southern Colombia tour to watch it live and support its conservation.
