The old city of Cartagena, el Centro or Amurallada (“walled city”) as the historic center of Cartagena is called, is certainly one of the most beautiful historic cities in the Caribbean. The old city wall is extremely well preserved to a large extent. A stroll across the city walls, in the Caribbean sun with a cool sea breeze is definitely the romantic highlight of any stay in Cartagena. For days, one could stroll through the picturesque streets, see the terraces entwined with flowers, relax in magnificent parks and walk along the fortress walls. Musicians and artists enliven the scene with interesting performances. From the monastery of Santa Cruz on the La Popa hill there is a beautiful view of Cartagena.
In the old town with its narrow streets and brightly painted colonial buildings, you will find numerous cafes, bars or restaurants that invite you to hide from the midday sun or relax with a cold beer after a busy day. In the center you will find many attractions such as the Inquisition Museum, various churches and the house of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, winner of the Nobel Prize in literature and Colombia’s most famous writer.
