Clouded Tiger-Cat
Leopardus pardinoides
Caldas, Colombia.

The discovery of the Clouded Tiger-Cat is a beacon of hope for conservationists. It emphasizes the incredible biodiversity that remains to be studied and protected. However, it also brings attention to the urgent need for conservation efforts. Habitat destruction and climate change pose significant threats to this newly discovered species. Protecting its habitat is essential for its survival and the health of the ecosystem it inhabits.

Grallaria saturata.
Equatorial Antpitta.

Among the 11 species that were split from the Rufous Antpitta, the Equatorial Antpitta is, by far, the most widely distributed. It is found from the Central Andes of Colombia throughout Ecuador to northern Peru, and it is quite likely to have been the species that was formerly on your list as "Rufous Antpitta".

The American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is the only flamingo distributed through the Caribbean Sea, on the northern coasts of South America, and on the Galapagos. Like other flamingos, it feeds in saline and brackish lagoons by straining water through the lamellae on its unique bill and swallowing the invertebrate organisms trapped inside. The American Flamingo tends to feed somewhat deeper than other flamingos, with the head and often much of the neck submerged. While most populations build mud nests in large colonies on mudflats or islands, the birds on the Galapagos nest on piles of stones and debris in small clusters on bare, rocky islands.

Endemic to the Caribbean coast of Venezuela and Colombia, the Vermilion Cardinal (Cardinalis phoeniceus) is a year-round resident of semi-arid scrub. It is a fairly common species and it is frequently observed perched conspicuously atop cacti or in the upper branches of shrubs. Although classified by the IUCN as Least Concern, it is declining, largely due to the demand for males in the illegal caged-bird trade. It is also threatened by habitat loss and degradation due to sand mining, cattle ranching, agriculture, and charcoal production.

Known in recent decades from just three localities on the Pacific slope of the West Andes in Colombia, Gold-ringed Tanager is a highly distinctive, black, dark green, and yellow bird. Most of the body plumage is dark green, with a mainly black head, and a yellow ring formed by the supercilium, which curves behind the auriculars and joins the broad yellow submoustachial. Finally there is a black throat (green in subadults) and yellow central breast patch. The undoubted rarity of this species, and ongoing deforestation within its small range, has led Gold-ringed Tanager to be listed by the IUCN as Endangered. In common with other Bangsia tanagers, it joins mixed-species foraging flocks, but relatively little is known concerning its ecology, other than a description of its nest and that it feeds on fruit and insects. Tiny Hawk.
Microspizias superciliosus.

The Tiny Hawk is among the most poorly known members of its genus in the Neotropics. Name for its diminutive size, the male Tiny Hawk is only about 75 g although females exceed 100 g. With relatively elongated toes the Tiny Hawk is highly specialized for preying on birds. Though it will likely take all manner of small avian quarry, it has been known to concentrate on hummingbirds, which it will either still-hunt or actively check perches used by the hummingbirds in their courtship display. The Tiny Hawk is distributed throughout tropical South America in humid lowland forest on both sides of the Andes, Panama, the Guianas and throughout Amazonia and to the southern and eastern coasts of South America. Despite its large range, it is seldom encountered and is poorly known, with very little data on its behavior and or its breeding.
