Toucan Barbet

The Toucan Barbet is one of the most striking birds of the Andean cloud forests of Colombia and Ecuador. Despite its name, it is not a true toucan, but a colorful barbet belonging to the family Semnornithidae.

Quick Overview

Scientific name: Semnornis ramphastinus

Family: Semnornithidae

Length: Approximately 20 cm

Range: Western Andes of Colombia and northwestern Ecuador

Habitat: Humid montane and cloud forests, forest edges, and fruiting trees

Elevation: Usually between 1,400–2,400 m

Identification

This species is unmistakable:

Bright green body

Thick multicolored bill

Blue throat and facial markings

Red tail tip and yellow breast patches

Short tail and chunky appearance

Males and females look very similar.

Behavior

Toucan Barbets are highly social and often move in pairs or small family groups. They are very vocal, producing deep, rhythmic duet calls that echo through the cloud forest canopy.

They spend much of their time:

Feeding on fruits

Visiting fruiting Cecropia and laurels

Occasionally taking insects

Perching quietly in mid-canopy

Photography Notes

This is one of the most desired cloud forest photography species because of:

Intense coloration

Cooperative behavior at feeders

Tendency to perch in open view

Dramatic cloud forest

Interesting Fact

The Toucan Barbet is one of only two species in the genus Semnornis, making it a very unique evolutionary lineage among Neotropical birds.
