🦌Meet the locals of Los Llanos! 🐊
In the vast savannahs of Casanare, Colombia, capybaras roam freely in herds, lounging by the water or grazing alongside deer, birds, and even caimans. 🦉
These gentle giants are the world’s largest rodents — social, curious, and a favorite among wildlife watchers. Seeing them in their natural habitat is part of what makes a safari here so special.
✅ Fun Facts About Capybaras
1. They’re the world’s largest rodent
Capybaras can weigh up to 70 kg (150 lbs) and measure over 1 meter (3.3 ft) in length!
2. They’re semi-aquatic
Capybaras are excellent swimmers and love lounging in water. They can even hold their breath underwater for up to 5 minutes.
3. They have webbed feet
Their slightly webbed toes help them move easily through water and muddy terrain—perfect for their life in wetlands.
4. They’re highly social
Capybaras live in groups of 10–20, but sometimes herds can number 50 or more! They communicate using clicks, whistles, and purr-like sounds.
5. They’re surprisingly chill
Known as one of the most easygoing animals, capybaras often hang out with birds, monkeys, turtles—and even humans. They’ve become a meme for their peaceful vibes.
6. They’re herbivores with a twist
Capybaras eat mostly grasses and aquatic plants—but like rabbits, they also practice coprophagy (eating their own p**p) to better digest tough plant fibers.
7. They’re related to guinea pigs
Despite their size, capybaras are closely related to guinea pigs and chinchillas, not beavers or pigs.
8. They can sleep in water
Capybaras sometimes doze while half-submerged, with only their noses sticking out—like little floating hippos!
