Day 29/30 of my Field Memories Challenge
Thick-billed Euphonia, Euphonia laniirostris , Euphonia gorgiamarilla , one of the stars of our mid-elevation routes.
A frequent visitor to the feeders, we also find this stunning species in single-species and mixed flocks, often alongside other tanagers of this elevation.

Here, we spotted a tree filled with these beautiful birds, offering some wonderful natural angles for photography. 📸

Day 28/30 of my “Memories from the Field” Challenge!

One of my favorites hummingbirds that can be spot around mid elevation routes around Minca, here we can see a female displaying her distinctive identification features a subtle white line behind the eye, like a small eyebrow, and darker feathers around the ear-coverts , details that are very visible in this field recording. 📸

The Coppery Emerald is considered a semi-endemic species, or a species with a restricted range. Its distribution includes northeastern Colombia — including the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Magdalena River Valley — extending into the Serranía del Perijá along the Colombia–Venezuela border.

We’re here at San Lorenzo Ridge!

Only a drone view can truly reveal the sheer majesty of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal mountain in the world.
It’s no wonder this is considered one of the most important birding hotspots on Earth!

At 2,800 meters (9,200 ft) above sea level, we’re standing above the clouds, with the Caribbean Sea stretching out in the distance. And getting here means traveling through an extraordinary gradient of unique ecosystems — home to the highest concentration of endemic species per area in Colombia, along with an incredible diversity of birds.

It takes 2 to 3 hours on rugged mountain trails in 4x4 vehicles to reach this incredible place, making our birding trips an adventure unlike any other!

We arrive at sunrise, just in time to take in the breathtaking views and make the most of the best birding hours, searching for some of the region’s most sought-after species. 🦜

We’re out exploring an intermediate-elevation cloud forest route above Minca with our friends from England, and it’s fascinating to hear the different perspectives each visitor brings.

One of the incredible surprises hidden along the special birding routes around Minca! 🌿

Day 27/30 of my *memories from the field* challenge, Golden-headed manakin, Saltarin cabeci-dorado, Ceratopipra erythrocephala.

Yesterday we discovered a Golden-headed Manakin lek in the lowland forests surrounding Minca, and had the amazing opportunity to witness its famous courtship dance!

It’s not easy to witness this beautiful jungle spectacle, but in their breeding season these incredible birds return to their special lek site to perform their spectacular courtship display.

We’re still amazed by this encounter and wanted to share with you one of those unforgettable moments that make a birding trip truly remarkable.

Minca’s mountain coffee farms are more than an lovely destination, they’re a very appreciated habitat for this beautiful hummingbird.

Day 26/30 Birds of my “Memories from the Field” challenge , Brown violetear, Colibri delphinae, Colibri pardo.

The tropical forests and mountain coffee plantations surrounding Minca create an ideal combination of habitat for the Brown Violetear, making Minca a remarkable place to experience both birdwatching and coffee culture in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

These lush coffee-growing areas provide nectar-rich flowers, forest edges, secondary growth, and abundant vegetation where hummingbirds thrive. The Brown Violetear can also be spotted feeding on small flowers or catching insects in flight.

Look for its unmistakable bright violet “ears”, one of its most distinctive features.

One of the wonderful things about a birdwatching expedition in Minca and its surroundings, is discovering birds’ nests, so carefully built to protect their young. It feels like getting a glimpse into their private lives, right in the middle of the incredible cloud forests of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

In order of appearance: Crested oropendola, Scarlet-fronted parakeet, Groove-billed Tucanet, Red-crowned woodpecker .

It’s an unforgettable nature experience—one that a photograph can never fully capture. You have to live it. You have to come, explore, and let yourself be surprised at every step.

Here I am with my dear friend from the Wiwa community, the guardians of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, known as the “Heart of the World.”
We’re exploring the beautiful cloud forest of Vista Nieves. The Indigenous people of the Sierra have an incredible knowledge of the birds’ songs and calls, and here we’re learning to identify them visually as well.
Sharing wonderful, meaningful, and fascinating moments together!

Migration season is just around the corner! Day 25/30 .
Soon, we’ll have the chance to spot this incredible migratory bird, the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Pico Gordo Degollado *Pheucticus ludovicianus*, arriving in Minca all the way from Canada and the United States.
They typically begin arriving in Colombia around September and October and stay through the boreal winter, until March or April. 🌎❄️➡️🌴
With its striking red throat and chest, this beautiful visitor is always a special sight—and a perfect guest for bird lovers and photographers alike. 📸❤️
Minca is waiting… and so are the best photographers! 😉
