Este pequeñín habita en bordes de bosque humedo, cafetales y zonas arboladas, en donde busca activamente por insectos que atrapa al vuelo.
Se distribuye desde el sur de los Estados Unidos, hasta el norte de Argentina. En Colombia, se puede ver en casi todo el país, hasta los 1800m.s.n.m.

Está pava se distribuye a lo largo de la vertiente occidental de la cordillera occidental de los Andes hasta el norte de Ecuador, desde los 100 m.s.n.m hasta los 1500.
Habita en selvas húmedas y bosques lluviosos, dónde puede pasar gran parte del tiempo inmobil y en silencio en lo alto de los árboles, se alimenta de frutos y y semillas.

Es una especie que según el libro rojo de las aves de Colombia está catalogada como Vulnerable (VU) y en la UICN figura como en peligro (EN)
