So we just created “The Emerald Trail” tour and Oh Boy! This tour really has it all.
In just 3 days, we ride mountains like we eat them for breakfast. Literally 3 hours of beautiful (and very twisty) paved roads as we head down to a huge reservoir, have a nice Colombian asado and we cross water with our bikes on a ferry.
Guess what, the adventure really starts here, because from now on is just off-road to get to Chivor (emerald mining town) where an emerald artisan gets us into everything you need to know about the town and its history with the gem buried in these lands, the Colombian Emerald.
We spend the night at - This place is a mixture of a finca, beekeeping nursery, boutique hotel with very personalized and home feel service. (This Hacienda is hidden in between the mountains, it’s crazy)
The next day, we horseback to an artisan mine, crossing rivers and enjoying the misty views. We go into an artisan mine which is like 2kms long with hidden waterfalls and “oil birds” in it, beforehand we get a full on explanation about how the miners work and we get the protective gear, because at the end of the mine tour we get to chisel like miners 🤑⛏️ (we go hard on this part), we then take all that dirt and wash it, so we keep the emeralds we find 🤩🤯
Listen, we haven’t even mentioned in terms of riding what this tour has to offer, both paved and off-road riding is mind blowing. These mountains are full of water so we see waterfalls everywhere😐 some other things we didn’t mention:
- 70 meter tall waterfalls
- Military bases hidden in the mist of the mountain
- Wet and muddy roads
- Authentic and regional foods
- Beekeeping tour
- Ride along cliffs
- Very cold paramos (we see frailejones)
- Colonial towns and very good coffee
If you want an experience where you want to take a real (self found) Colombian emerald back home as probably the best souvenir EVER, then this tour is for you🔥 BUT WAIT! You need to earn it, this tour is for intermediate (confident) type of riders.
