Abnormally hot day in Southeastern Arizona today. With temperatures over 100 degrees, the Gambel's Quail were still active, but gular fluttering in order to stay cool (a specialized cooling behavior involving the vibration of the throat pouch to accelerate evaporation and lower heat load).

Today marks the 6-year anniversary of the day I finally observed a Rufous-vented Ground Cuckoo at an army ant swarm in the lowland rainforests of Panama.
