Corcovado Tour in Sirena, and La Leona Station
Full day tour (Extreme Hiking)
Puerto Jiménez - Sirena Station - La Leona Station - Carate - Puerto Jiménez
Tour description
We depart from the Puerto Jiménez dock at 5:30 a.m., and we’re expected to arrive around 7:20 a.m. Upon reaching the beach, we’ll put on our shoes and begin our hike along the trails at Sirena Station.
The boat journey takes us through the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve, a crucial conservation area on the Osa Peninsula, before continuing along the coast of Corcovado National Park. During this ride, you may spot whales, dolphins, and seabirds, and enjoy stunning coastal views.
Once we reach Sirena Beach, we’ll put on our shoes, check in with the rangers, and then start our trek towards Carate. The hike covers approximately 20 kilometers and takes about 8 hours. Upon reaching Carate, a shared taxi will be waiting to take you back to Puerto Jiménez.
What is included?
A bilingual tour guide (English-Spanish).
Entrance fee to Sirena, and La Leona Station.
Transportation to Sirena by boat.
Collectivo from Carate to Puerto Jimenez.
What is not included?
Baggage carrying; you can bring only what you can carry unless you are planning to leave the heavy stuff in the boat. We can also take care of your big luggage in town in case it is necessary. Hotels also allow leaving your luggage stored while you go on the tour.
Binoculars; the guide brings his binoculars; however, they are for personal use unless the guide decides he wants to lend them.
Rubber boots; we have the option to rent rubber boots.
Reusable water bottles.
Car Parking; It is very safe to leave the car at the beach, as long as you take precautions like not leaving the car underneath a coconut tree, not parking the car in an area where it obstructs the way, or not leaving valuable stuff visible in the car.
Private boat; boats are shared, and therefore we must respect the departure times. We can also make the boat service private for an extra cost.
Pick up from your hotel; we do not include hotel pick-up. We depart from the main dock in Puerto Jiménez and bring you back to the same place.
Taxi service; if you need a taxi at the beginning or at the end of your tour, we can help you get one for an extra fee.
Taxes are not included in the price.
What do you need to know before booking?
Our groups are made of ten people + the guide; however, we can make a tour private for an extra cost.
Smoking in the park is not allowed.
Alcoholic drinks are not allowed in the park.
Bringing food into the park is not allowed.
Only reusable bottles are allowed into the park.
You must walk with your guide all the time (the guide walks first in line).
If you consider you will be making long stops, we strongly recommend getting a private tour, the idea of a group tour is to enjoy, and waiting for one person several times during the walk can ruin the whole experience for the group.
To get on the boat, we must get to the knees in the water, sometimes a bit higher, and the ocean can get sometimes agitated and splashes of water can get into the boat, you must protect your electronics and other belongings all the time.
We are located in the Tropical Rain Forest, it is quite normal to have some rain, so we are the ones deciding when a tour must be canceled because of rain or strong winds.
The timings might not be accurate since we are working in the wild and the weather conditions change, affecting the speed of the boat or the Colectivo service in case you are doing part of the tour on land. The weather conditions can not only impact the timing but how the boat behaves, the boat ride might get very bumpy too. In the case of the Colectivo, the road is not paved, so expect some rivers and holes in the road.
The weather can also modify the timings during the walks.
Mention when booking if there is someone in the group who is pregnant, to give them a seat in the back of the boat (even if you are booking a trip by car).
Mention when booking if anyone in the group has back problems to give them a seat at the back of the boat (even if you are booking a trip by car).
It is completely prohibited to bring any type of sharp weapon or any other type of weapon into Corcovado National Park. The park rangers are going to proceed to confiscate any type of weapon.
What would you see during this tour?
A Corcovado Tour is focused on wildlife observation, photography, and information about the flora and fauna of the area. Part of this tour is done in the ocean, home to several species of dolphin and seasonal whales. The beautiful coastline is part of the tour and seabirds.
Sirena is the station with more wildlife in Corcovado National Park, and therefore we have chances to see tapirs, two species of wild pig, one species of deer, several species of rodents, two species of anteater, four species of monkey, caimans, crocodiles, birds, reptiles, and arthropods.
There are six feline species in Costa Rica, and Corcovado reports four of them so far, however, a cat sight is a rare event, and the ones that are occasionally seen are pumas, and ocelots are seen in fewer opportunities.
With all this, it is extremely necessary to mention that wildlife is unpredictable and that we do not guarantee any specific sighting.
