A pod of humpback whales in Tamarindo 🐋 Rarely we see so many whales at the same time. Humpbacks come to Costa Rican shores to breed and give birth to their calves. They are mostly focused around the southern pacific coast, but there are occasional sightings in Tamarindo too. A real treat for the passengers of this fishing charter.

A rare sight of a Sperm Whale off the coast of Tamarindo, Guanacaste 🐳 This awesome video was taken by @rhinochargertamarindo - a local fishing charter who captured this footage yesterday. Around this time we have occasional sightings of migratory humpback whales who come down to breed from their usual feeding areas in Alaska. Sightings of other cetaceans are rare at this time of the year so it makes it all the more special when we get to see encounters like this!

A large pod of False Killer Whales (pseudorca crassidens) were spotted recently in the Marino Bellena National Park by our good friends at @ballena_aventura 🐬
Despite their name, they're actually dolphins which are more closely related to Risso's Dolphins and Pilot Whales than orcas. They are well known for being some of the most social dolphins on earth where they commonly interact non-aggressively which other species. Occasionally they have been known to breed with bottlenose dolphins both in the wild and in captivity, which results in a "wolphin".

Tamarindo's shipwreck ⛵⚓ An eyesaw or does it add to the beaches charm?
Our position is that it should be removed and dismantled as soon as possible (keep Costa Rican beaches pristine), but unfortunately it's turned out to be a very complicated and costly problem for both local councils and governing bodies.
The boat became shipwrecked several months ago during a bad storm and now is sucken so much into the sand it's impossible to move back out to sea. A crane was brought in to sort out the problem, but it proved too difficult to budge so now the only solution is a lengthy and expensive dismantlement of the ship. Considering the cost and interuption to many seafaring tours which launch from the location, it's proved to be more hassle than it's worth.

Fun fact, baby sloths can start intaking solid food only four days after birth. Females do not produce high amounts of milk as opposed to other mammals, which means that baby sloths will join their mothers in eating leaves. This allows the sloths to identify which leaves are edible and young sloths will often preference the same leaves that their mothers eat.
