We were in the middle of the jungle, observing a sloth calmly hanging from a branch, about 15 meters high in a tree. Suddenly, a tourist pointed out, amazed, that there was a snake very close, on the same branch. As the sloth touched the snake with its paws, the snake adjusted itself, allowing the sloth to hang there and scratch. To our surprise, the snake didn’t react at all. We were all in awe at that moment, at that height, in the middle of the jungle.

The tapir is a very interesting animal due to its interactions with other species
It is mostly nocturnal spending the day hidden in the forests away from people and anything that might distract it so it can rest peacefully.
It is a very calm animal and in fact, quite curious. At times, like on this sunny day, they seek water to cool off which makes them more visible
We, for our part, always try to respect their space enjoying their presence without interfering in their natural balance.

Enjoying the sighting of a sloth in its natural habitat, we observe it with respect as it goes about its needs, keeping a careful distance and avoiding any noise or interference, so it can continue its process naturally

The Central American tapir, also known as Baird's tapir, is a herbivorous mammal that inhabits the tropical forests of Central America.
It is characterized by its robust body and short trunk, which it uses to grab leaves and fruit.
In terms of its diet, the Central American tapir consumes a wide variety of vegetation, such as leaves, shoots, branches, fruit, and some shrubs.
Among its favorite fruits are guava, in some places bananas, in our area jícaro danto, and various species of wild fruits.
In addition, it also consumes bark and roots, adapting very well to its environment.
These animals are very important to the ecosystem as they help in the dispersal of seeds through their excrement and become very comfortable around humans when they are not mistreated or harmed.

In Costa Rica, visitors can enjoy the incredible experience of spotting the Central American tapir, especially here in Bijagua and Río Celeste —one of the few regions where this amazing species still thrives in the wild.

The tapir is the largest land mammal in Central America, standing about one meter tall and weighing up to 300 kilograms. It is mostly solitary and nocturnal, feeding on leaves, vines, and native fruits such as guava and the jícaro danto, a fruit unique to our region.

Although this species is endangered due to habitat loss and hunting, the joint conservation efforts of our local community and several institutions have shown hopeful results —today, it’s becoming more common to see tapirs crossing paths and forest trails throughout our area.

Come and discover the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting it. You might be lucky enough to spot a tapir during your visit! 🐾🌿
