6 in (15cm). Most closely resembles slaty-backed nightingale-thrush,but note dark iris and contrast between dark-olive back and black crown. Common in Caribbean foothills,from 1000 to 3,300 ft (300 to 1,000m) ; uncommon on pacific slope of guanacaste and tilarán cordilleras, from 2,300 to 4,300 ft (700 to 1,300 m). Stays low in mature forest.

9 in (23cm). Very similar to tropical screech-owl, bit note that the dark border of the facial disk is less distinct. The two species are best distinguished by voice where their ranges overlap— in Central Valley and pacific lowlands. Fairly common in northern pacific, to 3,300 ft (1,000m); uncommon in western Central Valley and rare east to cartago;also reported in caño negro region. Hunts from low perches in forest,gardens,and open areas.

Female and juvenile of this species are virtually identical to those of the orange-collared manakin (no range overlap); they can be distinguished from other small olive-green birds by their bright-orange legs. Common in Caribbean lowlands and foothills; to 3,000 ft (900 m). Stays in lower levels of second growth and forest edge.
