Happy Independence Day, Costa Rica! 🇨🇷🐴

On September 15, 1821, Central America declared independence from Spain. But Costa Rica did not receive the news immediately. The independence documents traveled overland and arrived in Costa Rica on October 13, 1821, carried by horseback. The “correo a caballo” brought the news from the north to San José and then Cartago.

So, more than 200 years ago, a horse and rider helped bring one of the most important pieces of news in Costa Rica’s history.

Today, horses remain deeply connected to Costa Rican culture, especially here in Guanacaste.
