3 Things Most Agencies Don't Tell You About Guanacaste

After more than 10 years working in tourism in this region, there are a few details very few agencies mention to their clients before they travel:

1️⃣ The weather isn't uniform.
Guanacaste has distinct microclimates: the coast can be sunny while areas closer to Arenal or Monteverde are experiencing rain.
Planning your itinerary around this makes the difference between a frustrating trip and a perfect one.

2️⃣ The "green season" (May–November) doesn't mean rain all day.
Rain usually falls in the afternoons, leaving clear mornings that are ideal for tours — with fewer crowds and better rates.

3️⃣ Distances on the map can be deceiving.
60 km in Guanacaste can take 1.5 hours depending on the road conditions. A good itinerary respects real travel times, not just what Google Maps shows.

As a tourism consultant, this is exactly what I value most: making sure the traveler's experience matches their expectations, starting from day one.

Did you know Guanacaste wasn’t always part of Costa Rica ?

Tomorrow, Costa Rica celebrates one of its most historic days: The Annexation of the Nicoya Part.

Back in 1824, the people of the Nicoya region voted to join Costa Rica under the iconic motto: “De la patria por nuestra voluntad” (By our own choice, part of the homeland).

Today, this decision gives us the vibrant Guanacaste culture we all love: the music, the marimba, the traditional food, and the warm spirit of our people.

Guanacaste has a way of surprising people who think they already know it.

The region takes its name from its own native tree, a giant that once shaded much of the land and still stands today as the symbol of the province.

It's called "the sunny side of Costa Rica" for a reason. Guanacaste sees fewer than 130 days of rain a year, making it the driest corner of the country.

Rincón de la Vieja, the largest and most active volcano in the region, holds a caldera that formed roughly 9,000 years ago and is still very much alive.

Miravalles, the province's tallest peak, sits above the largest geothermal field in Costa Rica, quietly powering part of the country from underground.

And the forests around these volcanoes hold more life than most visitors expect: tapirs, pumas, and the lowland paca move through terrain layered with orchids, bromeliads, and heliconias.

This is the Guanacaste most tours don't take the time to explain. We do.
