Roadside Hawk (Rupornis magnirostris) is a medium-sized diurnal bird of prey with a streaked white breast that contrasts with the bars on its belly. Adults have clear, piercing eyes and a barred tail. It is distinguished in flight by its long tail and short wings, and its distinctive shrill call.

It grows in forests and gardens, in soil rich in well-decomposed woody debris, under tropical climates. It is found in South Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Australia. It is edible.

In Costa Rica, it appears from May to November, being most abundant between July and August. The color of the indusium varies from clear white in specimens from high altitudes (900-1250 meters) to salmon-colored or yellowish-pink in specimens from lowland and hot areas.

The dried form of the mushroom is usually sold in Asian markets. It is simmered until tender and ready to eat. When cooked in the broth, it often plumps up, giving it a crunchy texture and an earthy, moldy flavor. It is considered a mushroom rich in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and protein. As if that weren’t enough, it contains several bioactive compounds and also has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
