Where you live in Costa Rica can shape your entire experience.

A beautiful beach town may look perfect during a vacation, but daily life is very different when you need healthcare, schools, reliable services, shopping, transportation, and a community that actually fits your lifestyle.

In this guide, we compare several of the best places to live in Costa Rica for Americans and expats, including:

Escazú for healthcare, schools, and city convenience
Moravia and Curridabat for a more local urban lifestyle
Playas del Coco for beach living near Liberia Airport
Uvita and the South Caribbean for nature and a slower pace
San Ramón and Orosi for cooler weather and rural living
Grecia for affordability, access to San José, and traditional Costa Rican life

We also explain the trade-offs that are often left out.

Some areas are more expensive. Some are more humid. Some are far from hospitals and shopping. Others offer more convenience but feel highly commercial or expat-heavy.

There is no single “best” place for everyone.

The right location depends on your priorities, your budget, your health, your family, and the kind of life you actually want to build.

Our strongest advice: rent for at least one year before buying. Explore different regions, experience the weather, understand the traffic, and see how each area feels in everyday life.
