The Great Fasting Mystery of Agami Island

Can you imagine going for weeks without feeding while remaining at your nest, protecting your future family?

That is exactly what we are investigating at Agami Island.

During our colony monitoring, we have observed an extraordinary behavior:
adults appear to stop feeding from the moment they arrive at the colony until their chicks hatch.

What have we observed so far?

• No feeding observed:during the incubation period, we have not recorded adults leaving the colony to search for food.

• Frequent hydration: adults come down to drink water several times a day, apparently as a strategy to sustain themselves during this prolonged incubation period. 💧

• The change occurs after hatching: our observations indicate that adults begin feeding again after their chicks hatch. 🐣

If this hypothesis is confirmed, we may be witnessing an extraordinary reproductive strategy that demonstrates just how much these parents can invest their energy in protecting and ensuring the survival of their offspring.

But there is still much to learn.

📊 The study continues. Our team will continue monitoring the colony to determine more precisely how long the adults remain without feeding, how they maintain their energy reserves, and what physiological processes occur during this period.

Every day at Agami Island reveals a little more about one of the most fascinating Agami Heron colonies we know.

Beauty!!!!!

Every breeding season, Agami Herons face many challenges. Predation, the loss of one of the adult birds, or even eggs falling into the water can cause a pair to lose their entire nesting attempt.

But these remarkable birds are incredibly resilient.

When a nesting attempt fails, many pairs begin again—building a new nest and making a second attempt to reproduce. During our current monitoring at Agami Island, we are observing a small number of pairs constructing new nests, a clear sign that the breeding season is still underway despite these setbacks.

Each new nest represents another chance to raise the next generation of this vulnerable species and highlights the importance of protecting the wetlands and nesting habitats they depend on.

Every second chance matters. 💚

Aplomado Falcon

A remarkable sighting at Agami Island!

Today we had the privilege of observing an Aplomado Falcon (Falco femoralis) at Agami Island—an exceptional record, as this beautiful raptor has very few documented sightings in the area.

This observation is another reminder that protecting habitat for one species benefits many others. Our conservation efforts, initially focused on safeguarding the vulnerable Agami Heron and its nesting colony, are also creating and preserving habitat for a wide variety of birds and wildlife.

Every new species recorded reinforces the importance of conserving healthy wetlands and forests. By protecting the Agami Heron, we are helping to conserve an entire ecosystem.

Conservation is about more than one species—it is about protecting life in all its diversity.

As part of our long-term monitoring program, the latest nest count at the Agami Island nesting colony recorded 446 active nests.

This ongoing monitoring is a key component of our conservation and research efforts, allowing us to better understand the breeding ecology of the Agami Heron and to develop science-based strategies for its protection.

With an average of two eggs per nest, we expect that within the next month the colony will be home to nearly 900 noisy chicks, marking one of the most exciting stages of the breeding season.

Every nest counted represents another step toward safeguarding this remarkable species and the wetlands it depends on. We look forward to continuing to share the progress of this incredible colony with you.

🪶 **¿Sabías que no todas las garzas Agami llegan a la colonia en las mismas condiciones?**

Gracias al monitoreo constante que realizamos en **Agami Island**, hemos observado un comportamiento muy interesante: muchas garzas Agami llegan a la colonia ya emparejadas y después de haber copulado, listas para iniciar la anidación. Sin embargo, otras llegan solas y es dentro de la colonia donde buscan pareja, realizan sus cortejos y forman nuevos vínculos reproductivos.

Este tipo de observaciones solo es posible mediante un seguimiento continuo y cuidadoso de la colonia, lo que nos permite comprender mejor la biología reproductiva de esta especie vulnerable y generar información valiosa para su conservación.

Cada día de monitoreo nos acerca un poco más a conocer los secretos de una de las aves más fascinantes de nuestros humedales.
