One of the few waterfalls with that amazing light blue coloration.
It’s located at parque nacional volcán Tenorio.
The Tenorio volcano (1,916 msnm) is a stratovolcano composed of a volcanic massif with five main craters: Tenorio 1, Tenorio 2, Montezuma, Bijagua and Olla de Carne.
Rio celeste is named for its distinctive color, which results from an optical effect caused by the scattering of sunlight due to the high concentration of aluminum silicates in its waters, it is one of the main tourist attractions of the park and the country. The river originates at the confluence of the Buena Vista and Quebrada Agria rivers on the slopes of the Tenorio volcano, in a place known as Los Teñideros (The Dyers).
Near this site is another location called Los Hervideros (The Boiling Springs), a hot spring where the water temperature can reach 31 to 94 °C. As it flows down from the volcano, the river forms a lagoon called Laguna Azul (Blue Lagoon), where the blue color of the water is most intensely visible. After the lagoon, the river continues its descent to form the Rio Celeste waterfall.
